Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune brought the play-by-play of a fight in Northwestern’s practices and Pat Fitzgerald’s extremely clever reaction to the fight.
Holding hands for a an entire lap is a nice punishment, mostly because it probably forces a man to hold hands with another man, which is awkward at first, but then becomes a moment of fellowship, and then of bonding, and then of tender feelings for each other, and the appreciation of the way the sun hits the trees just over the practice field. Hey, man, have you ever thought about how fleeting life is? Really thought about a day, and its seconds, and how good the smell of the fresh cut grass is and—-no, coach, you said one lap? Has it been three laps instead of one? I’m sorry, coach, we must have lost track out there…
