Luol Deng Makes It Home, Which Is A Lot Cooler Than It Sounds

This is the story of an African refugee that escaped his war torn homeland and found asylum in Britain. After growing up as a fish out of water among the British, he earned himself a college scholarship and immigrated to the United States. Once at school, he worked, and put himself in position to earn millions.

"Luck had a lot to do with it," he says.

It doesn't even matter that we're talking about an NBA player here. As cliche as it sounds, Luol Deng's story transcends sports. Imagine getting pulled out of your native country, unable to return for the next 25 years. It's such an abstract concept that it's next to impossible for us to relate to someone like Luol Deng.

But we can try. And to that end, the BBC's latest documentary, on Deng's first trip to Sudan since he left, goes a long way toward providing a window to understanding. Regardless of whether you like basketball, it's very cool stuff. Also: Check out this slideshow.
