SB Nation's Mock NHL Expansion Draft: Winnipeg And Quebec Select 52 NHL Players

James Mirtle, general manager of Quebec, and Gabriel Desjardins, general manager of Winnipeg, each selected 26 players a piece. Originally, the plan was to select 30 players for each team, which would have resulted in a 60 player draft, however as the event progressed, the two GM's agreed that 26 players per team worked just fine.

No more than two players could be taken from each NHL team, and Pittsburgh was lucky enough to not have any players taken off of their roster. Teams could also not lose more than one defenseman OR one goaltender.

Here it is, the complete draft.

You'll notice that these two teams are, well, kind of weak. Normally, in a true expansion, these teams would have the ability to fully participate in summer free agency, thus bolstering their rosters . That's not the case in our draft, but when you think about it, they're not going to face off against real NHL clubs anyway, so it's not too big of an issue.

Later in the week, however, our fake Winnipeg Jets and our fake Quebec Nordiques will face off in a seven-game series against each other -- a battle for expansion supremacy. Stay tuned for that, and stay tuned to your favorite SB Nation team blog for their reaction to losing players in this expansion draft.

i don’t know, Ohlund and Salo used to be one of Vancouver’s top D pairings….

Just an FYI to whomever made the chart… Cory Sarich is a D not an F.

I was confused about that too, but the Caps switch D and F all the type (Joe Finley, Tyler Sloan, Ben Clymer) so I went along with it. Probably should have Wikipedia’d him.

Mirtle looking for some 06 Carolina Cup mojo … Williams, Stillman both key parts, and Babchuk got his name on the Cup despite limited involvement.

Yeah, but have you seen Stillman lately? He’d fare better on that squad than with our sorry bunch, but he’s lost more than a step. Still a really heads-up player with alot of hockey sense, but he’s slow.

I’m surprised and disappointed that neither team took BizNasty2point0. From a fan relations perspective, that would be a gold mine.

I am floored that Hamrlik was left available. All he did was play tough minutes and move the puck in the right direction better than anyone else on the Canadiens last year. So he didn’t score; so what? He’ll be a great anchor for the Nu-Jets. Fantastic grab, Gabe.

Same idea with Gomez. Two top-end players left to the vultures, no less. I wish Robert would come along and let us know what he was thinking — Bruce gave us an inkling on Lions in Winter, but it’d be better from the horse’s mouth.

Frankly, leaving Gomez and Hamrlik unprotected was a really… odd move and it’s no surprise that they both got grabbed in the top ten picks. They were no-brainers for the expansion teams to pick up. I can’t imagine that the real Habs wouldn’t protect them and expose some of their grinders or low-end D-men instead!

Yes, they have big contracts, but that doesn’t translate into a need to get out of them at any cost. Minus these two guys I think the Habs would be pretty much a shoo-in for the lottery. Empty cap space won’t help the Habs win anything, and it’s no guarantee you can pick up someone as good substitute — the reason the Habs picked up Gomez in the first place was exactly because they couldn’t find a top-end center anywhere else.
