Josh Johnson Shut Down For Rest Of Season With Back, Shoulder Issues

Josh Johnson has already missed a start and a throwing session due to problems with his back and shoulder. There has been speculation that the Marlins would simply shut him down for the rest of the year to give him some rest and avoid taking an unnecessary risk, and sure enough, that's going to be their course of action:

Johnson's 2010 season ends with a 2.30 ERA, an 11-6 record, and 186 strikeouts over 183.2 innings. Though his missed time and relatively low innings total will probably keep him away from the top of Cy Young ballots, he does currently have the NL lead in ERA, with Adam Wainwright at 2.38 and Mat Latos at 2.43.

Josh Johnson Unable To Throw; Rest Of Season In Doubt

Josh Johnson's back already caused him to miss one scheduled start, last Friday. Now it seems he's experienced a setback, or at least a lack of progression:

With 21 borderline meaningless games remaining in their season, the Marlins have little reason to rush Johnson back into action. If he doesn't show improvement soon, the team will likely opt simply to shut him down.

Josh Johnson Dealing With Shoulder Inflammation, Back Trouble

Marlins ace Josh Johnson skipped a throwing session on Tuesday and didn't stretch with his teammates as he was dealing with some back pain. Wednesday, he was sent to South Florida to get examined by Dr. Lee Kaplan, and the results are in:

Johnson doesn't have anything serious going on in either his back or his shoulder, which is good news for everyone. However, he's still been scratched from his Friday start, and just when he'll return to action is up in the air. Joe Frisaro implies that the Marlins may even opt to shut Johnson down for the rest of the year, as the team has little reason to push its ace harder than it has to.

Johnson has a 2.30 ERA over 28 starts, with 186 strikeouts in 183.2 innings. Check out more over at Fish Stripes.
