NCAA Tournament 2011 Bracket Update: VCU Downs USC To Set Up Game With Georgetown

It wasn't pretty, but VCU managed to get the job done, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, thanks to their win over USC by the score of 59-46. The real March Madness starts now for the Rams, as they will have to travel from Dayton to Chicago to take on the Georgetown Hoyas. USC got VCU into foul trouble, but they were effective in shutting down the bigs of USC and their three point shooting in the second half was stellar after a poor first half. All in all, it was a scrappy and a sloppy game with a lot of turnovers and poor shot selection, but a win is a win. VCU advances, and USC goes home before playing in the proper rounds of the tournament.

USC Fans, check out Conquest Chronicles and SB Nation Los Angeles. VCU fans should join Mid Major Madness for CAA chatter.

USC Vs. VCU Score: Sloppy Game Tied 22-22 At Halftime In March Madness 2011

Do you like poor basketball? Boy, do we have a game for you! Some may call it physical, scrappy, and well defended, but most will call the 2011 March Madness game between USC and VCU what it is: Substandard basketball. Both of these teams have put in some solid performances so far this season, hence their at large bids into the NCAA Tournament, but it's been a struggle so far in this play-in game in Dayton, Ohio, as the teams are tied up at a score of 22-22.

USC is shooting a not so stellar 40 percent from the field, but their play is hardly embarrassing. VCU have been considerably less picky with their shot selection, and they're shooting a putrid 28.1 percent from the floor. However, thanks to the high rate of shots they take and some respectable work on the offensive glass, they're tied with the Trojans going into the second half.

The winner of this game gets the right to likely lose to Georgetown, which I hopefully did not just jinx.

NCAA Bracket Preview, Predictions: USC Vs. VCU

The less-outrageous of the two upper-seed play-in games, the Wednesday night contest between the USC Trojans and VCU Rams will give one the right to play the Georgetown Hoyas in the first ("second"!) round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. VCU slipped in despite failing to win the CAA and could become the conference's third team in the field of 64, while USC managed wins over Arizona and Texas after a hideous November.

Star Watch: Six-foot-ten, 260-pound forward Nikola Vucevic averages a double-double, finishing tops in the Pac-10 in rebounds with 10.2 per game. VCU duo Jamie Skeen, a six-foot-nine forward, and Bradford Burgess, a six-foot-six guard, combine to average 29.3 points and 13.6 rebounds per outing.

Prediction: Do I really have to pick between teams that lost to Bradley and Georgia State? Despite Vucevic's glasswork the Trojans haven't been able to exert a rebounding advantage against every many teams, but they have one in this game. USC wins.
