March Madness Scores: Gonzaga Looks Like Superior Team, Downs St. John's

Gonzaga has not had a particularly great season by its standards, but the Bulldogs looked like the Gonzaga of old in their first 2011 NCAA Tournament game. The No. 11 Bulldogs mopped the floor with No. 6 seed St. John's, routing them, 86-71.

Gonzaga took control early in the first half and never really gave it up, holding the Red Storm at arm's length the entire second half. Elias Harris hit a three-pointer a minute into the second half to give Gonzaga an 11-point lead, and the Red Storm never got back to single digits. It was a pretty remarkable display, considering these were the same Red Storm that topped Duke and Pittsburgh.

Marquise Carter scored 26 points on just 10 shots to lead Gonzaga, and Steven Gray added 16 for the Bulldogs. Dwight Hardy scored 26 to lead St. John's, who clearly missed D.J. Kennedy in this game.

Here is an updated look at the Southeast Region of the 2011 NCAA Tournament bracket.

NCAA Tournament Update: Gonzaga Dominating St. John's At Halftime

St. John's may be the higher seed in this 2011 NCAA Tournament game, but Gonzaga sure looks like the better team. The No. 11-seeded Bulldogs have maintained a solid lead against the No. 6-seeded Red Storm, and lead 43-32 at halftime.

Gonzaga has been able to get whatever it has wanted against the St. John's defense. The Bulldogs are shooting 58 percent from the field, have hit four of seven from downtown and have also shot 11 free throws, making nine. Steven Gray has 10 points to lead the Bulldogs, but everyone is getting in on the act.

St. John's is not playing poorly offensively, but they need to pick up the defense. Paris Horne has 10 points to lead the Red Storm, who desperately miss D.J. Kennedy in this one.

For more on this game, St. John's fans should visit Rumble in the Garden, while Gonzaga fans should visit The Slipper Still Fits.

NCAA Bracket Preview, Predictions: St. John's Vs. Gonzaga

One of the 2011 NCAA Tournament's most popular upset picks, the contest between the No. 6 St. John's Red Storm and No. 11 Gonzaga Bulldogs will decide who gets a likely second ("third") round matchup against the No. 3 BYU Cougars. No clue how Gus Johnson wasn't assigned to work an upset-alert game featuring a team for whom one of his greatest calls became a rallying cry, but all right.

Star Watch: Senior Dwight Hardy leads the Johnnies in scoring with 18 per game, while forward Justin Brownlee is in the team's top three in points, rebounds, blocks, steals, and shooting percentage, and he can shoot from deep pretty well for a big man. The high-scoring Zags spread the ball around well, with distributors Robert Sacre and Elias Harris averaging over 12 points and about six assists per game each.

Prediction: Lots of people are thinking upset, and the numbers back it up. The Red Storm has certainly lost to teams less talented than Gonzaga, and their Madison Square Garden referee magic won't join them in Denver.

More Reading: St. John's fans should already be reading Rumble In The Garden and SB Nation New York daily, while Gonzaga fans must be slippin' if they don't keep up with The Slipper Still Fits and SB Nation Seattle.
