NCAA Bracket Update, Illinois Vs. UNLV: Illini easily put away Rebels, 73-62

Though the final margin was only 11, make no mistake: Illinois was in total control of its NCAA Tournament opener against UNLV on Friday night. The Fightin’ Illini took a 22-point lead into the half and put it on cruise control in the second, rolling to a 73-62 win.

Illinois was up 20 with two minutes to go before UNLV came storming back, pouring garbage-time buckets in to at least make the final spread look a bit more respectable. The Illini were lights out all night, shooting 59.6 percent from the field and 53.8 percent from beyond the arc. UNLV, on the other hand, had trouble finding the bottom of the net from much of the game, shooting 38.9 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from three-point range.

Illinois moves on to face No. 1 seed Kansas in the Southwest region on Sunday. Kansas took care of business earlier in the day with a 72-53 win over Boston University.

NCAA Tournament Scores, Illinois Vs. UNLV: Fightin' Illini Crusing At The Half, 46-24

Illinois jumped out to an early lead over UNLV as the final slate of games get underway in the NCAA Tournament round of 64. The Fightin' Illini went into the half up 22, leading the Runnin' Rebels 46-24. In a game between No. 8 and No. 9 seeds, supposed to be the closest contests of them all, the results so far have been surprising.

Mike Davis and Demetri McCamey are a big reason for Illinois lead as the two scored 12 points each in the first half. Brandon Paul added six points and three others had four points in the half. Davis and Paul both had six rebounds in the half, as well.

Anthony Marshall had a team-high six points for UNLV, with Quintrell Thomas and Tre'Von Willis each adding five. Points were hard to come by for the Rebels, though, as the team combined to shoot 26.9 percent from the field and 25 percent from beyond the arc.
