VCU Basketball Coach Shaka Smart Reportedly Staying With Rams Following Final Four Run

Stay connected with SB Nation

In what would be a surprise move, VCU basketball coach Shaka Smart will remain with the Rams, according to a report from CBS Sports’ Gregg Doyal. It was believed by many that Smart would leave VCU following the team’s improbable run to the 2011 Final Four.

The 33-year-old coach’s stock skyrocketed after taking an 11-seed so deep into the NCAA Tournament in just his second season with the team. Missouri and N.C. State were the two most prominent schools believed to be courting Smart. Mizzou fell out of the running on Sunday when they hired Miami coach Frank Haith. According to a report on ACCsports.com, the opening at N.C. State was Smart’s to take, if he wanted it. Based on Doyal’s report, Smart opted to turn down the Wolfpack, and any other possible destinations, and stay in Richmond.

VCU athletic director Norwood Teague has made it clear since last week that the school would do everything it can to retain Smart as the Rams head coach. There is no word yet on a possible new contract for Smart, but it’s hard to imagine he would stay at VCU without a pay raise.
