VCU Keeping Shaka Smart As Basketball Coach, Athletic Director Confirms

VCU athletic director Norwood Teague confirmed to Sporting News on Monday that Shaka Smart will remain the Rams’ basketball coach next season. Teague also acknowledged that Smart turned down the N.C. State head coaching vacancy in order to remain with VCU. According to the report, N.C. State offered the position to Smart last weekend, along with a salary in the range of $2 million per year.

As part of Smart’s decision to stay with VCU, he is expected to receive a new contract with a pay raise that will increase his salary into seven-digits. Before VCU’s Final Four game on Saturday, Teague spoke with Sporting News about Smart’s future with the Rams:

“We’ve talked about that stuff so much. I bother him about it probably more than he bothers me,” Teague said. “I’m always, ‘You need to think of five things we’ll do in the next nine months. We’ll go raise the money, we’ll do it.’

“He feels so good about that. We’re still on the same page. We do things to our program that a lot of BCS programs don’t do, because we’re really a basketball-only school.”

This is obviously great news for VCU and its hopes to continue solidifying itself as a top basketball program. For N.C. State, the news couldn’t be worse as it’s now left with limited options for its next head coach.
