Shaka Smart's New VCU Basketball Contract Reportedly $1.2 Million Per Year For Eight Years

VCU basketball coach Shaka Smart’s new contract will pay him $1.2 million per year plus bonuses for the next eight years, according to Fox Sports’ Jeff Goodman. That’s less than the $2 million-ish contract N.C. State was reportedly offering, as the dear reader can easily calculate for herself.

But that contract also includes bonuses, which are likely set up to ensure another season like this one will go handsomely rewarded. Specific bonus terms haven’t been revealed yet.

Assuming he continues to produce, Smart is going to get paid — would it really have been worth leaving VCU just to compete at a school in the nebulous middle of the ACC for a contract that might actually work out to about the same as the Rams can offer? He can single-handedly build VCU’s athletic program into a moneymaker, or he can leave when one of college basketball’s top jobs open up.
