Vikings Narrow List To Morris Claiborne, Matt Kalil Or Justin Blackmon

The Minnesota Vikings are sitting pretty with the No. 3 pick in next week's 2012 NFL Draft. They have narrowed their choice down to three possible candidates.

2012 NFL Draft: Vikings Could Pass On Matt Kalil

If the 2012 NFL draft goes the way most think it will, the Indianapolis Colts will select Andrew Luck No. 1, the Washington Redskins will select Robert Griffin III No. 2 and the Minnesota Vikings will take Matt Kalil with the third pick.

The first two picks seem pretty well set in stone and the majority of people believe the Vikings will indeed end up taking Kalil at No. 3. But not everyone thinks the Vikings take Kalil. ESPN's Adam Schefter noted in a mailbag piece that he thinks the Vikings end up passing on Kalil.

The key to that would be Minnesota passing on Kalil, which I happen to believe the Vikings will. I'm in the minority there, and the Vikings are still deciding what to do, but I don't think Kalil is the lock that others do -- even if Minnesota stays at No. 3.

I'm not sure who the target woud be at No. 3 if it's not Kalil. Ryan Tannehill doesn't make sense with the Christian Ponder pick last year. Neither does Trent Richardson with Adrian Peterson in house. Maybe a cornerback, like Morris Claiborne, considering the Vikings are in need of an upgrade there. But is Claiborne good enough to pass on a franchise left tackle like Kalil? There's an argument there but ultimately the Vikings best pick would be Kalil.

If the Vikings don't take Kalil at No. 3 then it's possible he falls all the way to the Rams sixth pick. And if the Rams are on the clock and both Kalil and Trent Richardson are on the board, that's a heck of a decision they'll have to make.

SB Nation recently took a look at all the options for the Vikings with the third pick. Absent a trade down, Kalil still looks like the best pick.

Matt Kalil's Family Ties Matter In The NFL Draft

Matt Kalil is almost certainly going to be a Top 5 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. The USC product is considered by many to be the top offensive lineman available after not allowing a sack during his final season. But that's not the only reason scouts are interested in him. In an interview with XX Sports Radio in San Diego, Kalil revealed that scouts are also very interested in his family ties to the NFL (via Sports Radio Interviews):

"I think it is definitely important to them to see if you’re really all about football. That’s what they want to hear. They want to know if you’re all in to football and you’re going to dedicate 100 percent of your time and to have a family that has been involved in football, my father being in the NFL and my brother going through USC and now in the NFL, it definitely helps and I think they want to know if you’re all in and if football is what you want to do. I think they got that vibe from me. I’m 100 percent football oriented and I’ve spent my whole life playing football and it’s a big part of who I am so definitely got good vibes from all the meetings."

Kalil's brother, Ryan, is a three-time Pro Bowler with the Carolina Panthers and their father, Frank, was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1982 and played two seasons in the USFL.

Matt Kalil, NFL Draft 2012: USC Offensive Tackle With Impressive NFL Combine Workout

Former USC offensive tackle Matt Kalil had an impressive workout at the NFL Combine on Saturday and will certainly maintain his status as the top offensive line prospect in the 2012 NFL Draft. Kalil was one of only three offensive linemen to break the five second mark in the 40-yard dash. The tackle, who's been adding bulk in the lead up to the draft, weighed in at a hefty 306 pounds but still managed to run the 40 in 4.99 seconds.

Video of Kalil's 4.99 40-yard dash at NFL.com.

Kalil demonstrated not just speed but also strength, putting up 225 pounds on the bench press 30 times. Just a dozen of the offensive linemen tested so far have broken 30 on the bench press, with none coming close to Michigan's David Molk, who lifted it 41 times.

In addition to weighing in at 306, Kaili was measured at 6'6 1/2 and with 34 1/2 inch arms. He performed the ten-yard split in just 1.70 seconds, an important measurement for offensive and defensive linemen. Kalil is projected to go in the top five, with many having the Rams or Vikings taking him in either the No. 2 or No. 3 spot. His workout today solidifies that top five status.

Matt Kalil Putting On Weight Before 2012 NFL Combine

Ryan Kalil is getting ready for the 2012 NFL Draft Combine at API in Phoenix. From there, the former USC Trojan has been publishing a diary to The Sporting News detailing his preparations for the draft. According to Kalil, one of the biggest differences between training at a professional facility and training on campus is the meals. With a regimented diet in place, the offensive tackle has already added 15 pounds to his frame.

The food I'm eating is high quality and doesn't have a lot of fat. When you're taking in those fatty foods, it doesn't allow your muscles to recover as fast and doesn't allow for proper muscle growth. I've noticed a big difference. I've gained about 15 pounds, but I've also lost body fat while gaining weight. It's a healthy weight gain.

I definitely have a lot more energy and more stamina. The biggest difference is when I'm working out, I feel better. I don't feel sluggish from putting bad things in my body.

According to Kalil, he consumes an average of 5,500-5,800 calories a day on his new diet, which would have been near impossible to follow at USC while trying to find time to go to class. Kalil is still projected as one of the top draft picks in the 2012 NFL Draft. The SB Nation blog Mocking The Draft has him going No. 2 overall to the St. Louis Rams.

NFL Draft 2012: Matt Kalil Leaving USC, According To Report

After reportedly "leaning towards" staying at Southern Cal for another season to be able to take the Trojans to a bowl game, left tackle Matt Kalil has decided to turn pro, according to a report by ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Kalil has been widely projected as a Top 10 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Some expect Kalil to go as high as second overall in the draft. There was some belief that Kalil and USC quarterback Matt Barkley were a "package deal", but there have been no reports on Barkley's status. With Kalil leaving USC, it will leave a big hole to be filled at the left tackle position.
