2011 NFL Combine: Cam Newton Expected To Be Full Participant

Stay connected with SB Nation

We'll see at least one of the top two quarterbacks throwing at the NFL Combine.

According to the AP, former Auburn QB Cam Newton will be a full participant in the 2011 NFL Combine in Indianapolis this weekend. That means Newton will be throwing, unlike former Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert, who along with Newton, is expected to be one of the top two quarterbacks selected.

Newton's decision to throw is a curious one. Many of the top quarterbacks at the Combine decide to throw only at their pro day because it's a more comfortable environment with receivers and routes that you know well.

On the other hand, some NFL executives like to see that players want to compete and are willing to show their talent anywhere. To me, though, It seems more likely that you'd hurt your draft stock rather than help it by throwing at the Combine.

Newton conducted a workout last week for the media and reviews ranged from good to "phenomenal" as ESPN's Trent Dilfer put it.
