2011 NFL Mock Draft: New England Patriots Select DE Cameron Heyward

Stay connected with SB Nation

The New England Patriots are up next drafting 28th overall in SB Nation's 2011 NFL draft. This pick is a candidate to be traded on draft day but, for now, Pats Pulpit is selecting DE Cameron Heyward with the 28th overall pick.

I like this pick a lot, as does Pats Pulpit.

Sure, his production was not terrific last season, but he's a team captain, hard worker, and high character player. In addition, he looks the part of a 3-4 right defensive end in the mold of a Richard Seymour, standing at 6'5" and 294 lbs. He's not an elite run defender that will dominate double teams in the form of a left end such as Ty Warren, but he can push the pocket and line up in a variety of positions along the line to take advantage of his quickness.

One of the early draft picks in the Patriots dynasty was securing DEs Richard Seymour and Ty Warren. It's not a sexy position by any means but it's one of those positions that you absolutely have to get right. Plus, Heyward sounds like the type of person the Patriots tend to draft.
