Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick was one of the players invited to the 2011 NFL draft at Radio City Music Hall but has declined the invite, according to reports. The fact that he was invited at all is what I'm interested in.
Generally, the NFL invites the top prospects to the NFL draft in New York -- those who will be drafted in the first round, or perhaps early second round. Apparently, teams told the league that he was rated high enough that he merited consideration as a first round pick.
If that's the case, we very well could be on our way to five or more quarterbacks in the first round of the draft.
QB Cam Newton and QB Blaine Gabbert are guaranteed first rounders. QB Jake Locker is a likely first rounder and QB Andy Dalton was mocked to the Dolphins with the 15th overall pick in Peter King's mock draft so I'd say he has a good idea he's a first rounder. From there, you could also throw in QB Christian Ponder in the first round. I haven't even mentioned QB Ryan Mallett yet.
So if Kaepernick is a first round pick (which still appears unlikely), we could see at least five first round quarterbacks for thefirst time since 1999.
