We don't really know where any players will go in the 2011 NFL draft. A lot of people feel confident that QB Cam Newton will go first overall but there are also compelling arguments for them to take a defensive tackle. DT Marcell Dareus seems like a great fit in Denver but the Broncos are also looking at quarterbacks.
It's all a confusing time right now as we try to piece together which players will be selected by which teams in the NFL draft. Some of the confusion comes from QB Blaine Gabbert.
There's a slight chance he could be the Panthers pick at No. 1 but it seems most are mocking him to the Bengals (fourth pick) or Cardinals (fifth pick).
NFL Network's Michael Lombardi feels Gabbert's stock is slipping and he could be available for the 49ers (seventh pick) or Titans (eighth pick). The vast majority of mock drafts don't have him slipping past the Cardinals with the fifth pick but several noted draft analysts like Lombardi and Pat Kirwan of NFL.com think he can slip out of the top 10 entirely.
I think Gabbert would be a good fit with the 49ers if he were to slip. They could bring back Alex Smith, as they've said publicly, and let Gabbert ride it out behind Smith in year one. I think that would be a good fit but apparently the 49ers are "lukewarm" on Gabbert.
The draft is only a couple days away and we haven't yet nailed down a range for Gabbert.
