Sports Illustrated Peter King released his 2011 NFL mock draft last week and, unsurprisingly, he has Cam Newton going No. 1 overall to the Carolina Panthers (as does everyone else). But King is not as convinced as most pundits seem to be that Newton will end up in Carolina. King cites Newton’s poor showing in the “classroom” with Jon Gruden on ESPN, and the fact that new head coach Ron Rivera is defensive-minded.
Newton is one of five quarterbacks King has in the first round, with Colin Kaepernick and Ryan Mallett barely slipping to the second.
King’s full top 10 draft picks are as follows:
1. Cam Newton, Panthers
2. Marcell Dareus, Broncos
3. Von Miller, Bills
4. Blaine Gabbert, Bengals
5. A.J. Green, Cardinals
6. Julio Jones, Browns
7. Patrick Peterson, Texans via trade with 49ers
8. Nick Fairley, Titans
9. Tyron Smith, Cowboys
10. Robert Quinn, Redskins
