Seahawks Free Agents 2012: Marshawn Lynch Hits Free Agency If Franchise Tag Goes Unused On Him

The Seattle Seahawks could lose running back Marshawn Lynch this season since he is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent. However, the team could always use the franchise tag on him to retain him initially for one year. The team would then likely work on signing Lynch to a long-term deal should they want to do one. Lynch joined Seattle during the 2010 season. He rushed for 1,204 yards and 12 touchdowns in his first full season with Seattle.

The Seahawks will also see quarterback Charlie Whitehurst depart through free agency. Tarvaris Jackson is still the starter for the team, but the team will look for a better backup since Whitehurst was largely ineffective when he did play.

Rams Free Agents 2012: Over 20 Free Agents Await New General Manager

The St. Louis Rams' search for a general manager continues, with whoever head coach Jeff Fisher and CEO Kevin Demoff hire inheriting a list of over 20 unrestricted and restricted free agents to make quick decisions on.

The most intriguing name on the list is likely Brandon Lloyd, a 2010 Pro Bowler who was acquired from the Denver Broncos for what turned out to be a 2012 fifth-round draft choice. Lloyd caught 51 passes for 683 yards and five touchdowns in 11 games with the Rams, even though the team shuffled through three quarterbacks at the end of the season.

49ers Free Agents 2012: Several Key Contributors Headed For Unrestricted Free Agency

The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a storybook season under head coach Jim Harbaugh, finishing 13-3 and making the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Harbaugh was named Coach of the Year and quarterback Alex Smith, a former No. 1 overall pick who had fallen out of favor under Mike Singletary, passed for over 3,000 yards with 17 touchdowns and just five interceptions in earning the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award.

Smith did that on a one-year, incentive-laden deal, and the quarterback will be looking for much more in free agency. And he's not alone. Several of the key contributors for the 49ers in 2011 were playing under one-year contracts, including Pro Bowl cornerback Carlos Rogers and safety Dashon Goldson, kick returner Ted Ginn and special teams standout Blake Costanzo.

Cardinals Free Agents 2012: Cardinals Hope To Sign Calais Campbell Before Free Agency Begins

Despite acquiring quarterback Kevin Kolb from the Philadelphia Eagles after the lockout ended, and signing him to a $60 million contract, rumors continue to swirl that the Arizona Cardinals will pounce on quarterback Peyton Manning once the Indianapolis Colts decide to release him. Part of the reason the Cardinals are believed to be interested in Manning is that the rest of the roster, particularly on defense, is playoff-caliber, and a future Hall of Fame quarterback put them back on top in the NFC West.

One of the key cogs on defense has been Calais Campbell, a 6-foot-8, 300-pound defensive end who has 180 tackles and 21 quarterback sacks in 46 starts over the last three seasons. The two sides have been talking contract throughout the season, but have yet to reach a deal. The Cardinals may have no choice but to franchise Campbell, which is projected to be worth nearly $11 million in 2012.

Redskins Free Agency 2012: Fred Davis, LaRon Landry Set To Become Free Agents

Tight end Fred Davis, inside linebacker London Fletcher and safety LaRon Landry are three key players on the Washington Redskins who are eligible for unrestricted free agency this off-season. All three have considerable warts for the front office to consider.

Fletcher has been a tackling machine for the Redskins and is coming off a Pro Bowl season, but turns 37 in May. Landry was playing at an All-Pro level and likely would have already signed a contract extension had he avoided the injuries that have limited him to just 17 games over the last two seasons. Davis had a breakout season in 2011, but that was cut short by a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports that Davis could receive the franchise tag, which is projected to be worth around $5.5 million in 2012.

Eagles Free Agency 2012: DeSean Jackson Could Receive Franchise Tag

Upon signing with the Philadelphia Eagles after the lockout, quarterback Vince Young declared his new team to be the "Dream Team". That dream quickly turned into a nightmare, as the Eagles finished 8-8 and missed the post-season.

Young is one of the team's 11 free agents entering the 2012 off-season, a list that also includes wide receiver DeSean Jackson, a two-time Pro Bowler who has been less than happy with having to play out his rookie deal. Jackson caught 58 passes for 961 yards and four touchdowns, a down year for him considering his big-play capability. That rare talent could prompt the Eagles to use the franchise tag, which is projected to be worth nearly $9.5 million in 2012.

Cowboys Free Agency 2012: Anthony Spencer, Laurent Robinson Among FAs

The Dallas Cowboys always seem to be on the verge of great things but never quite get there. 2011 was much of the same with the team finishing 8-8 and losing in the final game of the season to the eventual division-winner and Super Bowl champion New York Giants. With a win, it would have been the Cowboys in the playoffs instead of the Giants, and who knows what could have happened?

The Cowboys enter the 2012 off-season with 52 players under contract and seven players who are either exclusive rights or restricted free agents. Linebacker Anthony Spencer, wide receiver Laurent Robinson and punter Mat McBriar are among the Cowboys' 11 unrestricted free agents.

Buccaneers Free Agency 2012: Rebuilding Process Starts Here

In just a few seasons, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers went from an up-and-coming franchise to one of the league's bottom-feeders. Things bottomed out in 2011 with a 4-12 record and a ten-game losing streak to end the year. Head coach Raheem Morris was shown the door and now the Bucs must re-build from the ground up.

That will have a lot to with how they handle their free agents. They don't have many but longtime Bucs like Ronde Barber and Ernest Graham are among the crop. The team also has to sort out RB LeGarrette Blount.

Panthers Free Agents 2012: 15 Players Will Hit Market This Offseason

The Carolina Panthers were a mediocre-to-bad team in 2011 based by objective standards. They were much better than the inept standard they set the previous year, however, and the season will remembered fondly by some thanks to Cam Newton's scintillating rookie season. The 2012 season should be another tough one with the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints not expected to take step back in the division, but with a strong offseason the Panthers hope to take another step towards relevancy.

Carolina has 15 players set to become free agents, to varying degrees, this offseason. Among them, only a few were quality contributors last season. Legedu Naanee and Jeremy Shockey were Newton's fourth and fifth favorite options last season based on receptions. Dan Connor, Omar Gaither and Jordan Senn are all UFA's as well, potentially creating a major void at linebacker. Overall, however, the Panthers are set to improve with another year of maturation with the pieces they have in place.

Saints Free Agents 2012: Drew Brees Among Unsigned

It wasn't long ago that a season that ended in the playoffs would have been deemed a major success for the New Orleans Saints. However, these days, it's status quo. And despite going 13-3 and winning the NFC South, it certainly felt like the status quo when the team was bounced in the Divisional Round by the San Francisco 49ers.

Obviously the first order of business is to sign quarterback Drew Brees, who will receive the franchise tag if the two sides cannot work out a long-term extension. Wide receivers Marques Colston and Robert Meachem and Pro Bowl guard Carl Nicks are also free agents that need contracts sooner than later.

Falcons Free Agents 2012: John Abraham Among Atlanta's 20 Free Agents

In hindsight, it is tough to fault the Atlanta Falcons for falling to the New York Giants in the Wildcard round of the 2012 playoffs. Still, Atlanta has been a team on the verge of bigger things for a while now, and with the right moves in the offseason they may finally be able to make a legitimate postseason run.

Key to a run could be defensive end John Abraham, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent after recording 9.5 sacks last season. At 34 years old, whether Abraham stays in Atlanta may have a lot to do with whether or not he believes the team can get him his first Super Bowl ring. Curtis Lofton, Thomas DeCoud and Brent Grimes are the other defensive starters set to hit the market.

Vikings Free Agents 2012: 18 Players Set To Hit Market This Offseason

The Minnesota Vikings stumbled to a 3-13 record last year. They will try to rebuild in the offseason in hopes of becoming a playoff contender once again, starting with the No. 3 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. They will also have to deal with a list of 18 players from their squad set to hit some form of free agency prior to the kickoff of next season.

Highlighting the list of UFA's are several options in the passing game. Visanthe Shiancoe has been a pivotal part of the Vikings offense, but recorded a four-year low 36 receptions last season with rookie Christian Ponder under center. Greg Camarillo and Devin Aromshodu combined for just 35 catches last year, but their departure would leave the Vikings scrambling for other options to fill the void.

The Vikings will also try to find a way to hang on to starting linebackers E.J. Henderson and Erin Henderson, who combined for 179 total tackles last season. Here's the full list of impending Vikings free agents, courtesy of Mac's Football Blog.

Packers Free Agents 2012: Three Offensive Starters Set To Hit Market

On the face of things, the Green Bay Packers are set to enjoy a relatively quiet offseason. Just eight players will become unrestricted free agents, meaning the Packers should stay relatively intact for another Super Bowl run after falling to the New York Giants in the 2012 playoffs. Some intriguing names will be up for grabs, however.

Starting with backup quarterback Matt Flynn, whose stock soared after he set a Packers record with 480 yards and six passing touchdowns during the final week of the regular season. Plenty of teams need help of quarterback, and the Packers certainly are not one of them. Flynn could get a chance to prove himself as a regular starter somewhere else next season.

Ryan Grant, Jermichael Finley and offensive guard Scott Wells all hit the market after starting last season. Grant and Finley struggled at times. The former has had to deal constantly with nagging injuries and a decreased role in the offense. The latter is physically gifted but hasn't shown the consistency needed to be an all-world tight end.

Lions Free Agency 2012: Detroit Could Lose Tons Of Offensive Depth

The Detroit Lions were one of the few teams that knew exactly where they stood once their season was over. None of their wins came against teams with winning records and none of their losses came against anyone with a losing record. The Lions gave and took everything they should have on their way to a 10-6 record and a first-round playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints.

The season defined Detroit as a team on the precipice of truly becoming good. That is to say, a team that can be expected to compete for a playoff bid on a yearly basis and perhaps make a legitimate run every once in a while. This offseason will be critical if they hope to pull themselves out of the basement for good. Key will be maintaining depth on offense. Jahvid Best and Matthew Stafford have yet to make it one full season without missing time due to injury, making the potential loss of both backup quarterbacks and three running backs somewhat scary.

Defensive end Cliff Avril is also set to hit the market, though there is a good chance that the Lions will opt to use their franchise tag on him. Here is the full list of impending Broncos free agents, courtesy of Mac's Football Blog.

Chargers Free Agents 2012: Vincent Jackson Set To Become Unrestricted Free Agent

The San Diego Chargers had a solid season in 2011, but missed out on a playoff berth. They'll look to readjust their team by freeing up payroll to pursue options outside of their organization, as they are not expected to bring back lead wide receiver Vincent Jackson.

That's far from the only area they will have to focus on, however, as the Chargers will need to make a decision on 20 different players who are set to enter some form of free agency on March 13. Here is the full list of impending Chargers free agents, courtesy of Mac's Football Blog.

Bears Free Agents 2012: Star RB Matt Forte Set To Become Unrestricted Free Agent

The Chicago Bears missed out on the playoffs in 2011 due in part to untimely injuries to key players. They will have some weaknesses they'll look to shore up in 2012, however, which they will be doing under the guidance of a brand-new general manager.

The Bears have a relatively small class of players who will enter free agency on March 13, but there are important names in that class that they will likely look to retain. The most notable name is that of Matt Forte, Chicago's star running back. The Bears are unlikely to let Forte slip through their fingers and will likely place the franchise tag on him if they are unable to work out a long-term deal.

Chiefs Free Agency 2012: Kyle Orton, Tyler Palko Among Impending Free Agents

The Kansas City Chiefs came up short of reaching the postseason in 2011, but saw some occasional glimpses of brilliance that should give them hope for next season. One of the issues that they will need to address in 2012 is their quarterback situation. Tyler Palko will be a free agent with whom the team has exclusive rights, but Kyle Orton is set to become a restricted free agent.

Before free agency begins on March 13, the Chiefs will have to look at the statuses of no fewer than 22 of their players who are due to enter some form of free agency. Here's the full list of impending Chiefs free agents, courtesy of Mac's Football Blog.

Raiders Free Agents 2012: RB Michael Bush Slated To Become UFA

The Oakland Raiders went through a turbulent season in 2011. They got off to their hottest start in years and looked playoff-bound before the passing of Al Davis, a plague of injuries to key players and a regression to their penalty-drawing days of recent seasons. They missed out on the playoffs by just one win (or one instance of the Denver Broncos not losing, if you want to be more accurate) and will be heading into 2012 attempting to field a team with more depth under the guidance of a new head coach and a new general manager.

To plan for the fall, the Raiders will first have to take a look at their free agent situation before free agency begins on March 13. Here is the full list of their impending free agents, courtesy of Mac's Football Blog.

Broncos Free Agents 2012: 17 Players Due To Become Unrestricted Free Agents

The Denver Broncos had a much-publicized and unexpected resurgent season in 2011, with young quarterback Tim Tebow leading the team to the postseason and an upset win over the Pittsburgh Steelers before meeting their match in the New England Patriots. Although the Broncos can be very pleased with how their season ended -- especially compared to expectations before it began -- they are certainly looking for ways to beef up their offense and improve their defense in 2012.

Denver will need to begin with looking at which players to retain for next year. Free agent season begins on March 17, at which point they will need to know where they stand with the 22 players who are due to enter some form of free agency. Jets Free Agents 2012: Plaxico Burress Among New York's Class Of Free Agents

2011 was a disappointing season for the New York Jets in many respects, one that saw them falling well short of their customary preseason boasts and missing out on the playoffs altogether. They'll have plenty of time to think things through during the spring and summer and plan how they're going to adjust the team in the fall. One of the first things they'll have to take a look at is their class of free agents. Free agency begins on March 13 and the Jets have 15 players who could be hitting the open market.

Among their impending free agents are wide receiver Plaxico Burress and safety Brodney Pool. The Jets have already addressed one of their free agent issues. Wide receiver Patrick Turner, who would have been eligible to become a restricted free agent, signed a one-year contract that will bring him back in 2012 for $875,000.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Matt Flynn, Mario Williams Among Marquee Names Hitting The Market

The season over, NFL teams can start planning for the 2012 season. Free agency begins on March 13. Which free agents will see the biggest demand for their services this spring?

Dolphins Free Agency 2012: Chad Henne, Paul Soliai Among Unrestriced Free Agents

When the 2011 season began, it seemed like the Miami Dolphins were on the verge of an historically abysmal season. While the team managed to turn things around a bit, they still finished the year with a 6-10 record and a tie for last place in the AFC East.

There are plenty of things that the Dolphins will need to address in the offseason as they attempt to start a fresh chapter in 2012. First up is the issue of their impending free agents. Quarterback Chad Henne is one of their 11 players who is slated to become an unrestricted free agent on March 13, as well as nose tackle Paul Soliai, who played under a one-year franchise tag in 2011. Odds are that the Dolphins will not be willing to pony up again to re-apply the tag in 2012.

After a hot start in 2011, the Buffalo Bills came crashing back to earth in a big way, finishing the season 6-10 and tied with the Miami Dolphins for last place in the AFC East. They have a lot of issues to address in the offseason, but perhaps they will first focus on their crop of players who are about to become free agents. Most notable in this group are LT Demetrius Bell and WR Steve Johnson.

The Bills have already dealt with a couple of their free agent issues. LS Garrison Sanborn signed a three-year extension and K Rian Lindell also signed an extension.

Titans Free Agents 2012: Key Defensive Contributors Could Leave

With the Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts in transition, the AFC South is not the powerhouse division it has been in the past. The Houston Texans are a solid team, but there are wins up for grabs. The Tennessee Titans could capitalize on these developments, but only if they keep their defense intact. Some of their best defensive contributors are unrestricted free agents, and they'll be hard pressed to keep all of the players that they want to keep around. Additionally, key offensive lineman Jake Scott is an unrestricted free agent.

Jaguars Free Agency 2012: Josh Scobee, Jeremy Mincey Are UFAs

The Jacksonville Jaguars have an average to below average number of unrestricted free agents, but that group includes a few of their best players. Kicker Josh Scobee will be a big priority in the offseason for the Jags, along with defensive end Jeremy Mincey. Rashean Mathis is starting to age and has had some trouble with injuries in the last three years, but showed flashes of his old Pro Bowl form in 2011. After a 5-11 season, the Jags could be in for some roster turnover.

Texans Free Agency 2012: Arian Foster, Mario Williams On Clock

The Houston Texans are coming off the most successful season in franchise history. A 10-6 finish earned them the AFC Scouth Division title and their first-ever playoff berth. They also picked up their first playoff win by beating the Bengals in the Wild Card Round before falling to the Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional Round.

For an encore, the Texans will want to do what they can to keep the pieces together. No piece is more important than running back Arian Foster, who is a restricted free agent. After him, a lot of pieces on the offensive line and defense need to be sorted into place.

Colts Free Agents 2012: To Peyton Manning Or Not To Peyton Manning?

The Indianapolis Colts went 2-14 in the 2011-2012 NFL season. There was a time not long ago when that was expected. But in the Peyton Manning Era, that's simply unthinkable. As such, it's no surprise that Manning spent the entire season on the sidelines, helpless to watch as the franchise he rebuilt crumbled in the blink of an eye.

That the Colts plan on drafting Andrew Luck isn't even the worst-kept secret because would require some semblance of secret-keeping. It's a fact. The question is not whether or not Luck will done the blue and white, but rather if he will spend his first season backing up a legend or beginning his own.

However, the Colts have a lot more on their mind than just Manning. They've got 22 free agents, 19 of which are unrestricted to consider. Among them are both back-up quarterbacks, three star receivers, key offensive linemen and a bevy of defensive ends.

One way or another the Colts are going to look drastically different in 2012.

Steelers Free Agents 2012: Mike Wallace Likely Due Big Raise

A season in which a team goes 12-4 during the regular season is rarely considered a disappointment. Don't tell that to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite a strong regular season, the Steelers were bounced out of the playoffs by the Denver Broncos in the Wild Card round and now face an uncertain offseason in which several of their key players will become some sort of free agent.

The biggest area of concern has to be the offensive line, where three of the five starters could leave. As unlikely as the scenario is, losing all three of Ramon Foster (restricted), Doug Legursky (restricted) and Max Starks (unrestricted) would be a massive problem for the Steelers. The other notable starter slated for free agency is wide receiver Mike Wallace (restricted). All he did was lead the Steelers in receiving yardage (1,193) and receiving touchdowns (eight) while enjoying his second straight standout season that puts him in line for a significant raise.

Browns Free Agents 2012: Peyton Hillis, Mike Adams Could Bolt

The NFL returned to Cleveland in 1999, but like so many of the years since, 2011 was not a kind one. The Cleveland Browns went 4-12 this year and missed the playoffs for 12th time in 13 seasons. That was mostly the fault of a feckless offense that ranked toward the bottom of the league in almost every category. On the free-agent front, it's a bit of a "beauty in the eye of the beholder" situation.

Depending on how you look at it, the Browns are either lucky to have just 15 players hitting free agency this year or have some tough decisions to make on the players already under contract. Even among the starters slated for free agency, none are coming off spectacular seasons. Running back Peyton Hillis (unrestricted) was solid when healthy, but he also rushed for just 587 yards and scored just three touchdowns in 10 games. Safety Mike Adams (unrestricted) started all 16 games, but his three interceptions are a bit low from a position that is supposed to be all about ball-hawking.

Bengals Free Agents 2012: Manny Lawson, Reggie Nelson Only Defensive Starters Slated For Free Agency

Based on expectations, 2011 was a pretty nice year for the Cincinnati Bengals. Coming off a 4-12 season and having a rookie as your starting quarterback are rarely harbingers of success, but the Bengals managed to go 9-7 and qualify for the playoffs for just the third time since 1990. The 2012 offseason is shaping up as a big one, though, as four offensive starters are slated to become free agents.

Among the key players who could leave are running back Cedric Benson (unrestricted), wide receiver Jerome Simpson (unrestricted), guard Nate Livings (unrestricted) and tackle Dennis Roland (unrestricted). On defense it's a much less sketchy situation as linebacker Manny Lawson and Reggie Nelson are the only starter slated to hit free agency. That's undeniably a good sign, as the defense as clearly the strength of the Bengals in 2011, ranking seventh in yards allowed and ninth in points allowed.

Ravens Free Agents 2012: Ray Rice, Cory Redding Among Starters Who Could Leave

By most reasonable measures, 2012 was a successful season for the Baltimore Ravens. It obviously didn't end with a Super Bowl victory, but it did include a 12-4 regular-season record and trip to the AFC championship game. Their defense also allowed the third fewest points and the third fewest yards in the NFL. The 2012 offseason is a bit of a mixed bag as a handful of key players will be free agents of one form or another.

Among 2011 starters, Ray Rice is probably the most significant player to be an unrestricted free agent. Other starters who will be free agents include cornerback Cary Williams (restricted), center Matt Birk (unrestricted), defensive end Cory Redding (unrestricted) and linebacker Jarrett Johnson (unrestricted). Linebacker Brendan Ayanbadejo, who's the primary backup to the aging Ray Lewis, will also be an unrestricted free agent.
