Joe Gibbs Racing Welcomes Dollar General

Dollar General is going all in with NASCAR in 2012.

While the Goodlesttsville, Tenn. based company already partially sponsors Kyle Busch Motorsports' Truck effort--and will continue to do so for 10 races in 2012, it was announced on Thursday at Charlotte Motor Speedway that the company will back Joe Gibbs Racing effort for 12 races at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series level with Joey Logano and the No. 20.

Dollar General is the second NASCAR Nationwide Series sponsor to come over to the Cup level in October. As you will recall, 5 Hour Energy announced last week at Kansas Speedway that they will sponsor Clint Bowyer in the No. 15 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota in a limited schedule.

The retail chain will continue to make its presence known in the NASCAR Nationwide Series by backing the entire 35-race schedule for Brian Scott in the No. 11 Toyota, as well as 10 additional races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series with either the No. 18 or No. 20 car with Busch or Logano sharing driver duties. Brian Scott is currently ninth in the NNS points standings.

Joe Gibbs also made it known that Home Depot will still be the primary sponsor for the No. 20 car. Home Depot has been the exclusive sponsor for the No. 20 car since 1999, when they entered NASCAR with Tony Stewart. Gibbs said Thursday during the press conference that he approached Home Depot and asked for permission to add another sponsor to the No. 20. He wanted it known that this was not a reflection of the performance of Logano, who is currently 23th in Cup points and has finished no better than 16th in the point standings the past three years.

Dollar General has been involved in NASCAR for eight seasons. Recently, the company ended its relationship with Indy Racing Car Series team Sarah Fisher Racing despite winning with driver Ed Carpenter in the No. 67 Honda two weeks at Kentucky Speedway.

"We chose to increase our presence in NASCAR because it is sport that reaches our customers,"  Rick Dreilling, Dollar General chairman and CEO, said. "We look forward to working with JGR and KBM to help us build our brand through NASCAR."

There is no word on how long the partnership with Dollar General will last.

"We are planning a long-term deal with Dollar General," said Gibbs. "We would like to be with them for a very long time."
