Probably because he was rendered cinematically by Gary Cooper, an actor who made a career of being shy and retired, we don't think of Lou Gehrig as feisty. Yet here he is in a Chicago Tribune wire photo from Game 1 of the 1938 World Series, raising a ruckus with umpire Charley Moran over a called third strike. Of course, by that point in his life, there is no telling how generally frustrated he was feeling.
