Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow is making his 2011 NFL season debut. Tebow came in, in relief duty for the Broncos last week against the San Diego Chargers. Tebow attempted only 10 passes, completing four of them but nearly got the Broncos a victory throwing a Hail Mary at the end of the game. Shortly after he was named the Broncos full-time starting quarterback and will make his first start against the Miami Dolphins.
The Miami Dolphins, sitting at 0-5 and struggling to sell tickets, decided that they would run a promotion for the game hosting the Broncos to try to drive public interest. So, what promotion did the Dolphins decide on?
The Dolphins are going to be honoring the Florida Gators 2008 National Championship team on October 23. The team that was quarterbacked by... Tim Tebow. The Dolphins will be hosting the Denver Broncos, the same Broncos whose starting quarterback is...Tim Tebow. So, the Dolphins will in essence be honoring... the quarterback of the team trying to hand them their sixth straight loss of 2011.
Aside from halftime at the stadium being really, really awkward... the ploy didn't even work. The Dolphins still had to buy up unsold tickets so the game wouldn't be blacked out, according to Andrew Carter of Sun-Sentinel:
Dolphins buy out all remaining tickets again to avoid blackout. Not even Tim Tebow could sell it out.
..ouch.
