Colts Place Kerry Collins On Injured Reserve

The Kerry Collins experiment was short-lived in Indianapolis. The Colts officially placed the 18-year veteran on injured reserve Tuesday, ending his 2011 season after just three games due to a concussion suffered last month against the Steelers. Collins, 38, signed a one-year, $4 million contract when he was coaxed out of retirement to replace Peyton Manning, and it seems likely that will be the last contract he ever signs.

Collins never appeared to fully grasp the Colts' offense, which, Reggie Wayne would like to remind you, "ain't vanilla, man." He completed just 49 percent of his passes, averaging just 160.3 yards per game. Even if his concussion symptoms cleared, he probably wouldn't have overtaken Curtis Painter for starting duties. Painter, 26, is also winless as a starter, but he's shown flashes of potential and should have a long future in the NFL, even if it's just as a career backup.
