NBA Lockout 2011: David Stern Sends Memo Urging Players To Accept Deal

NBA commissioner David Stern sent a memo directly to NBA players on Sunday night, urging them to accept the owners' most recent proposal and have the 2011-12 season begin. The memo attempted to clear up what Stern believes are misconceptions about the league's latest offer.

Here is the most important paragraph from the memo, which you can find here:

I encourage you also to focus on the numerous compromises that were made to the NBA's initial bargaining positions in these negotiations, including our move away from a "hard" salary cap, the withdrawal of our proposal to "roll back" salaries in existing player contracts, our agreement to continue to allow players to negotiate fully guaranteed contracts, and our agreement to a 50/50 split of BRI. While we understand fully that our proposal does not contain everything that the Players Association wanted in this negotiation, the same is true for the NBA.

The NBA player representatives are meeting on Monday to discuss whether to accept the NBA's offer, which was obtained in full by USA Today. Stern's memo was part of a larger campaign by the league to speak directly to its players. The campaign included a Twitter Q&A and a power-point presentation with key talking points of the offer.

apparently orlando will take the deal, and it's easy to know why

because look at the guys on that team:

1. Dwight wants full FA options, and this deal gives him that.
2. Gilbert doesn’t want to lose any more money out of his contract. Even if a team uses the amnesty provision on him, Gil gets paid every dime left on his deal.
3. Turkoglu gets over 30 million in the next three years with a player option at the end.
4. JJ Redick is paid at least 6 million a year this year and next. Decent role player, but he doesn’t deserve that type of money.
5. Duhon himself (the rep who said he’s going for the deal) is getting paid nearly 4 million to be a bench player.
6. Jameer is getting paid over 7 million a year each of the next two seasons, and is overpaid

A team with overpaid players who really shouldn’t command that type of money will go for this deal because each lost game check means that that’s money that they will likely never be able to make up under any circumstance. For Dwight, it gives him is chance to LeBron Orlando.

Pretty funny
I encourage you also to focus on the numerous compromises that were made to the NBA’s initial bargaining positions in these negotiations

The “initial bargaining positions” for the NBA was “we want the sun, the moon and the stars”. To call the changes “compromises” is laughable.

The players have made all the concessions from an actual existing functioning agreement, but Stern’s trying to spin it as owners reaching across the abyss.

And people wonder why the players would be ticked off?

the players are doing the same thing.

And many people are not happy with the players as well.

Not true to the first part of your statement

Agree with the second.
