Edwin Jackson: Attention Seeker

Edwin Jackson is a free agent. Edwin Jackson is good. Edwin Jackson isn't getting any attention. Poor Edwin Jackson :(

Let me begin this by saying that I'm sure he'll find a good new home eventually. I'm sure he'll find a good new home, and I'm sure he'll sign a good new contract. By the time it's all said and done, he will have gotten something in the neighborhood of what he deserves. But.

Today is December 23. There are two days to go until Christmas, which means it's basically already Christmas. Because it's basically already Christmas, it's basically already New Year's, which means it's basically already 2012.

There is a pitcher. He is a starting pitcher, and he is a free agent. Below, please find more facts about this pitcher:

  • Over the last three years, this pitcher has posted the same ERA as James Shields.
  • Over the last three years, this pitcher has posted the same FIP as Jair Jurrjens.
  • Over the last three years, this pitcher has posted the same xFIP as Chad Billingsley.
  • Over the last three years, this pitcher has made as many starts as Cole Hamels.
  • Last year, this pitcher posted the second-lowest ERA of his career.
  • This pitcher throws a harder average fastball than Brandon Morrow and Ubaldo Jimenez.
  • This pitcher is a day older than Joey Votto, and two days older than Jacoby Ellsbury.

This pitcher sounds fantastic, right? Maybe "fantastic" is too strong of a word, but this pitcher sounds like a good pitcher to have. He has good stuff, he's had good results, he's durable, he's young, he's readily available - what's not to like?

This pitcher, as was given away by the headline, is Edwin Jackson. I don't know why I was trying to play the secrecy card for so long. I kind of messed that up at the very beginning. Edwin Jackson is good. He has something of a spotty reputation, but he's good, and he's there for the signing. And yet.

It isn't just that Edwin Jackson hasn't signed with anybody. Prince Fielder hasn't signed with anybody. Ryan Madson hasn't signed with anybody. Carlos Beltran signed with the Cardinals on Thursday. That much is kind of understandable.

It's that Edwin Jackson hasn't signed with anybody, and that there haven't even been rumors of pursuit. These last few days I've been reading a ton of rumors about Joe Saunders. I've seen rumors about Jeff Francis. Rumors about Hiroki Kuroda. Rumors about Roy Oswalt. Nothing on Edwin Jackson. I will refer you to Edwin Jackson's Rotoworld page. How about the most recent updates?

Dec 13
Cardinals received cash considerations from the Blue Jays to complete July's blockbuster trade involving Colby Rasmus and Edwin Jackson.

Nov 23
Edwin Jackson was offered arbitration by the Cardinals.

Nov 8
Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Yankees are interested in free agent Edwin Jackson, in addition to C.J. Wilson and Yu Darvish.

Oct 23
Edwin Jackson labored mightily in Game 4 of the World Series Sunday, allowing three runs on three hits and seven walks over 5 1/3 innings.

That bare. And the November 8 rumor wasn't even particularly strong. Here's the source tweet:

#yankees exec billy eppler grew up w/ cj wilson. whether this means anything, i dont know. #yanks also eye darvish & e-jax

For the sake of comparison, Prince Fielder's Rotoworld page has nine updates since last weekend. Joe Saunders has five updates since last Friday. Edwin Jackson is sitting beside the phone, trying to look busy but knowing that he looks like a man who's trying to look busy.

I get it, kind of. I really do. Edwin Jackson is represented by Scott Boras. Scott Boras clients usually don't settle real quick. It makes sense to me why the Edwin Jackson sweepstakes haven't intensified.

But the fact that said sweepstakes haven't even developed, at least publicly...we just saw the Washington Nationals pay an absolute fortune for Gio Gonzalez. Gonzalez is two years younger than Jackson, yes, but he isn't objectively better. The Gonzalez rumors came hot and heavy until their conclusion. The next Jackson rumor will be the first in well over a month.

Jackson will get his money. He'll get his team. He'll probably be satisfied. This waiting game is weird, though. All Edwin Jackson wants for Christmas is a declaration of interest.
