4 round mock draft edition 2

Some big changes in all 4 rounds. Cam Newton's stock is way up.

Round 1

Carolina (2-14)

Team Needs: QB, 2DT, WR1, RG, RDE, TE, CB

Nick Fairley | DT/DE | Auburn

Unless Cam Newton continues to improve his draft stock, I don’t think there is any way Fairley does not end up going number 1. He is an absolute monster that flat out makes plays. He can make plays in run support and can get after the QB.

Denver (4-12)

Team Needs: DT, CB, SS, RT, TE, DE, RB

Patrick Peterson | CB | LSU

Peterson is a once in a decade prospect. He is the best CB prospect since Charles Woodson. He has a rare combination of size and speed and is a ball hawk. If you throw the ball to him there is as much of a chance of him catching it as the WR.

Buffalo (4-12)

Team Needs: QB, LT, DE, Rush LB, RT, WR, TE, ILB, CB3

Cam Newton | QB | Auburn

Newton showed a lot of skill at his workout. He was throwing the ball with a  ton of zip and had a lot of accuracy. He reminds me of Big Ben in his combination of size, strength, and poise. Very limited experience but I think he will be a very good quarterback.

Cincinnati (4-12)

Team Needs: DE, RB, WR, ILB, QB, LG, SS, K, KR

Da’Quan Bowers | DE | Clemson

Bowers had 15.5 sacks this year and made a ton of plays. He is the best DE in this year’s class and will be a great compliment to Dunlap. The two of them will be a feared combination for the Bengals for years to come.

Arizona (5-11)

Team Needs: QB, LT, 2 Rush LB, LG, RT, CB, FS

Von Miller | OLB | Texas A&M

Miller is the best pass rushing prospect in this year’s class. With no QB’s or LT’s worth this pick, I think Miller is a safe bet. He has low bust potential and has great upside. I think he could be a top 10 OLB in this league as a rookie and then continue to progress.

Cleveland (5-11)

Team Needs: WR, RT, DE, DT, weakside LB, CB, RG, SS, K

A.J. Green | WR | Georgia

Green is the best WR prospect since Calvin Johnson. No chance he busts. He has a freakish combination of size and speed and couples that with great hands and route running.

San Francisco (6-10)

Team Needs: QB, DE, Rush LB, CB, FS, WR, OT

Marcell Dareus | DE/DT | Alabama

This is one of the toughest picks in the draft for me. Do they pull the trigger on Blaine Gabbert? Do they take Robert Quinn? Or do they get a stud player in Marcell Dareus? I like Dareus the best of those 3 prospects so I gave him to the Niners.

Tennessee (6-10)

Team Needs: QB, LG, ILB, C, DE, Weak LB, SS, DT

Blaine Gabbert | QB | Missouri

Gabbert is a good but not great QB prospect. I don’t think he has very good mechanics but I think the Titans are so desperate for a QB that they will reach for him. Has huge bust potential.

Dallas (6-10)

Team Needs: CB, RT, FS, RE, LG, SS, DL, WR

Prince Amukamara | CB | Nebraska

Amukamara is what we call a shutdown corner. He simply blankets his opponent. Therefore he does not make as many plays as Peterson but he is just as valuable. Reminds me of Namdi Asamogua.

Washington (6-10)

Team Needs: QB, WR, RT, Rush LB, ILB, NT, CB, RE, FS, RG, C, FB, K, P

Robert Quinn | OLB | UNC

Quinn would have been a top 5 pick if he was not suspended for the season. He is a great pass rusher and very good in run support. The biggest question is can he drop back in pass coverage. The Redskins have so many needs that they have to just take BPA in every round and I think Quinn is the BPA.

Houston (6-10)

Team Needs: NT, 2 Rush LB, FS, SS, CB, WR, P, DL

Aldon Smith | OLB | Missouri

Smith is an athletic freak that will be a good OLB in the NFL. He reminds me of Jason Pierre Paul as his combine performance will greatly improve his stock. He has a high ceiling but a very low floor.

Minnesota (6-10)

Team Needs: QB, 2 OLB, 2S, CB, RG, WR, LE, K, C, DT, TE

Akeem Ayers | OLB | UCLA

With no QB worth the pick, the Vikings look to rebuild their OLB group. Ayers is the best 4-3 OLB in this year’s class and will be a very good player.

Detroit (6-10)

Team Needs: 2OLB, CB, LT, C, SS, RB

Brandon Harris | CB | Miami

The Lions get screwed. Ayers goes one spot before them. However, they turn to rebuilding their secondary and Harris is a very good corner. He is very instinctive and a great play maker.

St. Louis (7-9)

Team Needs: WR, RG, DT, Weak LB, SS, TE, RB, CB, DE

Julio Jones | WR | Alabama

The Rams need to surround Sam Bradford with play makers. Jones is a great route runner and has great size and speed. The biggest knock on him is his hands. However I think he can overcome that and develop his catching ability and become a great WR1.

Miami (7-9)

Team Needs: QB, RB, FS, TE, LG, WR, CB3, Rush LB, OL

Mark Ingram | RB | Alabama

Ingram is on the verge of being taken over by Mikel Leshoure as the #1 RB in this year’s class. However for now, he is still the best so I will keep him here. Ingram has great potential to be a feature back in this league. He has a great combo of size and speed.

Jacksonville (8-8)

Team Needs: DE, 2S, CB, WR, Weak LB, QB, OL

Cameron Jordan | DE | California

Jordan is a very good DE prospect. He is very good in run support and can get after the QB. He does not have the ability to become a pro bowler but he has low bust potential. I see him becoming like an 87 in Madden but I never see him becoming the 95.

New England - from Oakland (8-8)

Team Needs: G, OT, Rush LB, DE, WR, RB

Nate Solder | LT | Colorado

Solder is the best OT in this year’s class IMO. He has a huge frame and good use of his arms. His footwork needs to improve but I think he can be very good. Like Jordan, I never see him becoming an elite LT but I do see him becoming a very good LT.

San Diego (9-7)

Team Needs: Rush LB, DE, RT, ILB, WR, FS, CB3, ST

Ryan Kerrigan | OLB | Purdue

Kerrigan is more likely a OLB than a DE since he only ways about 240 pounds. But I think he will be a very good OLB. He is a good pass rusher and is good in run support.

New York Giants (10-6)

Team Needs: LT, RB, C, Strong LB, LG, WR, FS, P

Derek Sherrod | LT | Mississippi State

Sherrod has a ton of potential and is extremely talented. He needs to work on his use of his hands and some footwork issues but I think he can be very, very good.

Tampa Bay (10-6)

Team Needs: 2DE, ILB, RT, LG, Strong LB, RB, C, CB

J.J. Watt | DE | Wisconsin

Watt is another of my favorite prospects. He has a great motor and works as hard as anybody in this draft. People question whether he has enough speed to play 4-3 DE in the NFL and I think he does.

Kansas City* (10-6)

Team Needs: Rush LB, WR, NT, QB, LT, RT, C, RB, ILB

Justin Houston | OLB | Georgia

Houston is exactly what the Chiefs need at OLB. He is a great pass rusher and is also very good in run support. An under-rated prospect that has great upside.

Indianapolis* (10-6)

Team Needs: LT, RT, DT, RG, WR, SS, RB, QB, P

Anthony Costanzo | OT | Boston College

Costanzo is a very smart player. He has great footwork and size. He does not use his hands as well as some of the other OT’s in this draft but he will excel in the Chiefs blocking schemes.

Philadelphia* (10-6)

Team Needs: RT, RG, 2CB, 2OLB, SS, DE

Gabe Carimi | OT | Wisconsin

Carimi is the type of OL that Andy Reid loves. He is absolutely massive and has great strength. Will probably start from day 1 at RT. Over time he can transition to the left side.

New Orleans* (11-5)

Team Needs: DT, ILB, DE, RT, RB, strong LB, SS

Corey Liuget | DT/DE | Illinois

Liuget is a good DT prospect. He will play DT not DE in the Saints scheme. He is great in run support but not a very good pass rusher.

Seattle* (7-9)

Team Needs: CB, SS, RT, LE, WR1, RG, QB, K

Tyron Smith | OT | USC

If this situation played out I could see Seattle trade down to the early 2nd round. None of the BPA fill any needs so I just gave them the best of my BPA that fills some sort of need. I could also see them reaching for Jimmy Smith or Aaron Williams if this happened.

Baltimore* (12-4)

Team Needs: WR, DE, CB, ILB, RT, RG

Titus Young | WR | Boise State

The AFC Divisional round vs. my Steelers showed that the Ravens “feared” trio of Housh, Boldin, and Mason is not really that good. They need to find a play-making deep threat in the draft and Young is exactly that.

Atlanta* (13-3)

Team Needs: 2WR, LT, 2G, SS, strong LB, CB3, TE, DE

Torrey Smith | WR | Maryland

Atlanta needs to continue to surround Matt Ryan with the tools to succeed. Outside of Roddy White they don’t have anybody to fear. Smith would be a dangerous weapon to add to that offense as he has great speed.

New England* (14-2)

Team Needs: G, Rush LB, DE, WR, RB

Cameron Heyward | DE | Ohio State

Heyward is another one of my favorite prospects. He had a great bowl game which helped his stock tremendously. He has all the tools to be a great 3-4 DE in this league for the next decade.

Chicago* (11-5)

Team Needs: LT, LG, DT, C, WR1, Strong LB, RB, DE, P

Benjamin Ijalana | OT/OG | Villanova

Chicago gets one of the most versatile players in this year’s class. Ijalana can play RT, RG, or LG right now and eventually he will be able to play LT. A great fit for the Bears as they have needs all over the line. Once he develops, he will be a great LT.

New York Jets* (11-5)

Team Needs: rush LB, DE, CB, ILB, WR, K

Adrian Clayborn | DE | Iowa

The Jets don’t mind players with character concerns. Clayborn did not handle the double teams he faced this year well at all but he is still a super talented player that will not fall out of the 1st round. Good value here if they can get him to work hard.

Pittsburgh* (12-4)

Team Needs: RG, CB, OT, NT, DE, FS, P

Phil Taylor | NT | Baylor

NT is not a need right now for the Steelers but it will be in 2 years. The Steelers ALWAYS take BPA in the 1st couple rounds and this year won’t be any different. Taylor has the tools to be an all-world NT and learning from Casey Hampton will only help that.

Green Bay* (10-6)

Team Needs: Rush LB, LG, DE, RB, OT, WR, K

Mike Pouncey | OG | Florida

The Packers running game was awful this year but it was not because of their RB’s. It was because of their porous OL. Pouncey is a very good guard that will be an upgrade at the LG spot.

Round 2

New England - from Carolina (2-14)

Team Needs: G, Rush LB, WR, RB

Mikel Leshoure | RB | Illinois

The Patriots don’t need another RB but why not. They have so many picks that adding another weapon like Leshoure is worth it. They can fill there bigger needs later in the draft.

Cincinnati (4-12)

Team Needs: RB, WR, ILB, QB, LG, SS, K, KR

Martez Wilson | ILB | N.C. State

Wilson is the best ILB in this year’s draft and has the potential to be an All-Pro ILB.

Denver (4-12)

Team Needs: DT, SS, RT, TE, DE, RB

Muhammed Wilkerson | DT/DE | Temple

Team Needs: Rush LB, DE, RB, OT, WR, K

Denver needs to spend at least its first 3 picks on defense. Wilkerson is a versatile player that can play either DE or DT on the Broncos. I think he will be mostly a DT but he could be like Ngata is to the Ravens and they could move him around depending on matchups.

Cleveland (5-11)

Team Needs: RT, DE, DT, weakside LB, CB, RG, SS, K

Stephen Paea | DT | Oregon State

Transitioning to a 4-3, the Browns will need to spend most of their picks on defense. Paea is an ideal 4-3 DT and will start right away as the browns have literally no one to play DT in a 4-3.

Arizona (5-11)

Team Needs: QB, LT, Rush LB, LG, RT, CB, FS

Jake Locker | QB | Washington

The Cardinals need to find their QB of the future in this draft. Locker has a lot of potential and upside but will need to develop for a while.

Tennessee (6-10)

Team Needs: LG, ILB, C, DE, Weak LB, SS, DT

Rodney Hudson | OG | Florida State

Hudson is a talented player but he needs to add 15 or 20 pounds to be able to compete with the huge players on the defensive lines of the NFL. If he can do that he will be one of the biggest steals of this draft.

Dallas (6-10)

Team Needs: RT, FS, RE, LG, SS, DL, WR

Rahim Moore | FS | UCLA

Moore is the best safety in this draft. He has great speed, great instincts, and is a very good tackler. Great value in the middle of the 2nd round.

Washington (6-10)

Team Needs: QB, WR, RT, ILB, NT, CB, RE, FS, RG, C, FB, K, P

Colin Kaepernick | QB | Nevada

Kaepernick needs to work on his technique but he is very athletic and has tons of upside. He can develop for a year behind Rex Grossman and Donovan McNabb (if he stays) and then start for the Redskins in a year or two.

Houston (6-10)

Team Needs: NT, Rush LB, FS, SS, CB, WR, P, DL

Jerrell Powe | NT | Ole Miss

Powe is a huge NT that can anchor the Texans new 3-4 defense for years to come.

Minnesota (6-10)

Team Needs: QB, OLB, 2S, CB, RG, WR, LE, K, C, DT, TE

Christian Ponder | QB | Florida State

Last week, I did not include Ponder in my 4 round mock draft. However, over the past couple days I have watched a lot of tape on him and I noticed that when he is healthy he is a very good QB. He can compete with Joe Webb for the starting spot right away.

Detroit (6-10)

Team Needs: 2OLB, LT, C, SS, RB

Stefen Wisniewksi | C | Penn State

I know Lions fans want an OLB in round 1 or 2 but who would you want in this draft. In round 1 you could take Ryan Kerrigan and in round 2 you could take Sam Acho. The value is not there for either of those players.

San Francisco (6-10)

Team Needs: QB, Rush LB, CB, FS, WR, OT

Ryan Mallet | QB | Arkansas

Mallet is a very talented QB but concerns over his leadership ability and is intelligence will cause him to fall out of the 1st round. If Harbaugh can get him into the right mindset he can become a very good QB

.

Denver - from Miami (7-9)

Team Needs: SS, RT, TE, DE, RB

Robert Sands | SS | WVU

As I said earlier, Denver needs to spend at least their 1st 3 picks on defense. Sands is a great SS that will be very good in the NFL. He is a sure tackler, a good hitter, and has very good instincts.

St. Louis (7-9)

Team Needs: RG, DT, Weak LB, SS, TE, RB, CB, DE

Kyle Rudolph | TE | Notre Dame

Last week I had Rudolph fall to round 4 but when I thought about the Rams situation with Bradford having no playmakers I figured that they will look to add a lot of weapons in this year’s draft. Rudolph will be a very good TE in this league and him and Jones will give Bradford a great duo to help him out.

Oakland (8-8)

Team Needs: CB, RT, LG, C, strong LB, WR1, TE

Jimmy Smith | CB | Colorado

The Raiders need to replace Asamougua (sp?) with a corner that can blanket a receiver and jam receivers. Smith is exactly that. While he will probably never be as good as Namdi, he can become a very, very good CB in the NFL.

Jacksonville (8-8)

Team Needs: 2S, CB, WR, Weak LB, QB, OL

Quinton Carter | FS | UNC

Some Jaguars fans say they don’t need a safety but they must have been watching a different Jaguars team. The Jags have no safety’s that stand out and Carter would likely start right away for them.

San Diego (9-7)

Team Needs: DE, RT, ILB, WR, FS, CB3, ST

Allen Bailey | DE | Miami

Bailey is a great DE prospect that falls to the 2nd round for 2 reasons. One is that there are so many good DE’s in this year’s draft. The other is that there are concerns about him playing every snap like it is important. However, he is too good of a talent for the Chargers to pass up on.

Tampa Bay (10-6)

Team Needs: DE, ILB, RT, LG, Strong LB, RB, C, CB

Greg Jones | ILB | Michigan State

Jones is a hard-working, over-achieving player who will no doubt be a very good player in the NFL. He is a great tackler as well as being great in coverage.

New York Giants (10-6)

Team Needs: RB, C, Strong LB, LG, WR, FS, P

Jordan Todman | RB | UCONN

Todman has the tools to be a feature back in the NFL. He has a good combination of size and speed and has great vision.

Indianapolis* (10-6)

Team Needs: RT, DT, RG, WR, SS, RB, QB, P

Drake Nevis | DT | LSU

Nevis is a good but not great DT. He will never be a pro bowler but has all the tools to be a very good DT. He will thrive in the Colts system.

Philadelphia* (10-6)

Team Needs: RG, 2CB, 2OLB, SS, DE

Marcus Cannon | OG | TCU

Another Eagles type of OL. Cannon is absolutely huge at 350 pounds and has great strength. His footwork is ok but it could improve. Him and Carimi can anchor that line for the next decade.

Kansas City* (10-6)

Team Needs: WR, NT, QB, LT, RT, C, RB, ILB

Jonathan Baldwin | WR | Pittsburgh

Outside of Dwayne Bowe, the Chiefs have no receiving weapons. Baldwin is an elite talent that struggled this year due to a 5-9 QB that could not throw it more than 20 yards. Baldwin and Bowe will be almost impossible to stop.

New Orleans* (11-5)

Team Needs: ILB, DE, RT, RB, strong LB, SS

Quan Sturdivant | ILB | UNC

In a 4-3, your ILB needs to be able to cover sideline to sideline. Sturdivant has the speed and agility to do that.

Seattle* (7-9)

Team Needs: CB, SS, LE, WR1, RG, QB, K

Aaron Williams | CB | Texas

Williams is a great CB and if he is here, the Seahawks have to take him. He blankets receivers and tackles well.

Baltimore* (12-4)

Team Needs: DE, CB, ILB, RT, RG

Christian Ballard | DE | Iowa

Ballard is another one of the people in this draft that over achieve. He works hard and is very smart and is a great tackler and run stopper. Will be a very good player for the Ravens.

Atlanta* (13-3)

Team Needs: WR, LT, 2G, SS, strong LB, CB3, TE, DE

Marcus Gilbert | OT | Florida

Gilbert has the tools to be very good. He is smart, big, and strong. If he works hard he will become a great LT. This is a high risk, high reward pick.

New England* (14-2)

Team Needs: G, Rush LB, WR,

Leonard Hankerson | WR | Miami

Hankerson will add to the already dangerous Patriots offense. He is a big and fast WR that has good hands. His route running needs some work but he will be a very good player in the NFL.

San Diego - from New York Jets* (11-5)

Team Needs: RT, ILB, WR, FS, CB3, ST

Jason Pinkston | OT | Pittsburgh

Pinkston can start out at RT and then if the Chargers want, he can switch to LT.

Chicago* (11-5)

Team Needs: LT, DT, C, WR1, Strong LB, RB, DE, P

Joseph Barksdale | OT | LSU

Barksdale is a slight reach here, but the Bears line is so awful that they have to take multiple OL in this draft early. Barksdale is big and strong but his footwork needs to be improved.

Pittsburgh* (12-4)

Team Needs: RG, CB, OT, DE, FS, P

Curtis Brown | CB | Texas

Brown is a smart, hard-working player. He tackles well but his best strength is his ability to lock down a WR. He will likely start in the nickel spot as it is impossible for a rookie to start in Dick Lebau’s system but in a year or so he can become the CB2 to help Ike out.

Green Bay* (10-6)

Team Needs: Rush LB, DE, RB, OT, WR, K

Jake Kirkpatrick | C | Nevada

I know that center is not a need right now but the Packers center is old and not very good. Kirkpatrick could sit for a year and then start.

Round 3

Carolina (2-14)

Team Needs: QB, DT, WR1, RG, RDE, TE, CB

Marvin Austin | DT | UNC

Cincinnati (4-12)

Houston (6-10)

Team Needs: Rush LB, FS, SS, CB, WR, P, DL

DeAndre McDaniel | SS | Clemson

New England - from Minnesota (6-10)

Team Needs: G, Rush LB,

Danny Watkins | OG | Baylor

Detroit (6-10)

Team Needs: 2OLB, LT, SS, RB

Sam Acho | OLB | Texas

There we go. Finally a good OLB with good value to give the Lions. Acho has a great motor and a great work ethic and I think he will be very good in the NFL.

San Francisco (6-10)

Team Needs: Rush LB, CB, FS, WR, OT

Kendric Burney | CB | UNC

Tennessee (6-10)

Team Needs: ILB, C, DE, Weak LB, SS, DT
