LB LaMarr Woodley will be franchise tagged by the Pittsburgh Steelers between now and Feb. 23, according to Adam Schefter. The team has been very interested in keeping Woodley for the long term, which wouldn't necessarily be ruled out by the application of a franchise tag. The Steelers could still negotiate a fresh contract once a new collective bargaining agreement is agreed upon.
Woodley produced 10 sacks and 50 tackles for the AFC champion Steelers in 2010, his third straight season with double-digit sacks. He made the Pro Bowl and was named a second-team All Pro in 2009 and continued his run into the postseason, becoming the first player to record multiple sacks in three straight postseason games.
The Steelers have another in a long line of great Pittsburgh defenses, and retaining talent like Woodley will be a priority for the future, especially as he enters what could be the prime of his career.
