West Brom Send Manager Roberto Di Matteo Packing

West Bromwich Albion lost 3-0 to Manchester City on Saturday, something most clubs are wont to do from time to time. Apparently, however, it was the last straw for the West Brom board, who decided that manager Roberto Di Matteo needed to go -- immediately.

Despite the Baggies' good run of form at the start of the season, form that was good enough to see them take fourth place for a bit, the team's 13 defeats in 18 games was just too much for the West Brom leadership. Although Di Matteo took the club to promotion in his first season in charge, and has them playing some of the most entertaining football in the league, it's time for him to be on his way. Staying up in the Premier League is what's most important, and that is what West Brom aim to do by finding another manager.

It remains to be seen, however, just who it is that will get the Baggies to stay up. Coach Michael Appleton has been installed as caretaker manager while a replacement is sought, although who it is that will do a better job of getting West Brom to play well, and to stay above the relegation zone, is a difficult question. How long until the name Martin O'Neill is bandied about?
