The St. Louis Cardinals came into Spring Training looking like the narrow favorites in the NL Central. At the very least, they were about neck-and-neck with the Reds. But then they were dealt the news that Adam Wainwright needed Tommy John surgery. That knocked out their best starting pitcher for the entire 2011 season, and some of 2012. The last thing they'd need, then, was for something to happen to Chris Carpenter as well, but:
Chris Carpenter just walked off the field injured with the trainer. He is done for the day. Not good news for the Cardinals.
Now, understand that, right now, we don't have any additional information. We don't know the nature of Carpenter's issue, or the severity. This could be devastatingly major, or this could be something from which he bounces right back tomorrow. But just the fact that something's wrong at all is enough to send shivers down the spines of Cards fans who've already had a lot to deal with, what with the Wainwright and Albert Pujols situations.
Carpenter made 35 starts a year ago, posting a 3.22 ERA, but it's worth noting that he does have a long injury history, having undergone surgeries on his shoulder and elbow. The Cardinals don't need this hanging over their heads, and everyone's got their fingers crossed that nothing significant is wrong.
