German Bernd Schuster, who managed Real Madrid to the title in 2007 - 2008, stepped down today from his position as head coach of Turkish SuperLig club Beşiktaş. Schuster had been with the club for a mere nine months, taking over from Mustafa Denizli, who led the club to a title in 2008 - 2009 before seeing them finish fourth last season.
Beşiktaş have won just one of their last seven matches, drawing two and losing the other four. The poor run of results sees the club in seventh position and is the reason Schuster gave for his resignation. Assistant coach Tayfur Havutçu will assume the managerial mantle until the end of the season.
The next match for Beşiktaş sees them hosting Kayserispor, currently fifth in the SuperLig. A win could lift them into sixth place, but they need at least seven to move into the European positions, and eleven to catch leaders Trabzonspor and Fenerbahçe.
