Don't look now, but we could have another Tyson Alualu type shocker in the top ten picks of the 2011 NFL Draft. Temple defensive tackle Muhammad Wilkerson is starting to garner some interest from teams selecting in the top half of April's draft. According to SI.com's Tony Pauline, Wilkerson has scheduled visits with both the Tennessee Titans and Minnesota Vikings. In addition, the former Owl has forthcoming visits with the Dolphins, Ravens, and Chiefs.
The massive 6-5 315 pound defensive tackle has commonly been found towards the end of round one in most mock drafts, but it is not crazy to think he could sneak into the top half of the first round by the end of April.
After the jump find out what makes Muhammad Wilkerson a potential top ten pick.
A top ten pick in the NFL Draft is a considerable investment of both time and money. Thus, the fact that Muhammad Wilkerson has the versatility to play in multiple defensive schemes at multiple positions has to intrigue teams that are trying to get a strong return on their investment.
On top of his scheme versatility, Wilkerson has plenty of room to add to his already massive frame. He has put on 10 pounds during the pre draft process, and could add another ten throughout his playing career, which would make him an imposing force on the defensive front.
Also, in the NFL the quarterback must go down and the quarterback must go down hard. For an interior lineman, WIlkerson shows a surprising ability to get the quarterback. With a decent first step and an agile lower half, Wilkerson collected 16.5 sacks in his final two seasons at Temple. The scary part is that his technique and explosiveness are only going to improve as he thrust into an NFL workout plan. The kid has all of the tools necessary to be a disruptive force on the defensive line for years.
Wilkerson seems to have established himself as the third best defensive tackle in the 2011 class, but where will that get him drafted? The Titans would love to finally get a replacement for Albert Haynesworth while the Williams Wall is on its last legs in Minnesota. Is there a GM out there that will fall in love with Wilkerson enough to make him a top ten pick?
