Say this for Portland Timbers fans: No one should accuse them of being of the fair-weather variety. Following a loss in their MLS debut, more than 1,000 fans waited in line at Jeld-Wen Field for as long as eight hours to buy single-game tickets for the 2011 season. Unsurprisingly, the Timbers announced the home opener on April 14 had sold out. In addition to the home opener, all 12,500 season tickets have sold out and a waiting list has been established.
The Timbers turned the day into a bit of an event when players Adam Moffat and Mamadou Danso showed up to keep the potential ticket buyers company. They signed autographs and handed out slices of pizza and cups of coffee.
The home-opener against the Chicago Fire will mark the long-awaited return of top-flight soccer to Portland. Although teams have existed in various minor leagues throughout the past 30 years, Portland has not had a top-level team since the original Timbers of the NASL folded in 1982.
