Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, who had played in every minute of every Real Madrid match in La Liga up until today, went off in the 77th minute of Madrid's match against Malaga on Thursday. The injury occurred while Ronaldo was scoring a goal to complete his hat trick, and his goal was the seventh and final goal in Madrid's 7-0 drubbing of the relegation threatened team from the southern coast. Real were coasting before the goal, looking like a team that could have easily went on to score more goals before the end of the match, but they seemed to be a bit shaken by Ronaldo's departure.
It wasn't clear exactly what happened to Ronaldo, but he appeared to injure his ankle as he made contact with a Malaga player during his shot. As opposed to seeking treatment on the sidelines and watching his teammates finish the game, Ronaldo proceeded directly down the tunnel into the locker room. Whether or not this means his injury was serious is purely speculation, but it's hard to believe that Ronaldo would have left the field if he only picked up a minor knock.
We'll update right here as more information comes in on the severity of Ronaldo's injury and whether or not he will be missing the upcoming UEFA Champions League clash against Olympique Lyon.
