Jah Reid
6'7, 327 pounds | Offensive tackle | UCF
Agility: At 6'7 327lbs, Reid has surprisingly fluid motions. He is light on his feet and able to quickly change his direction. Reid does an excellent job sitting into his stance as he possesses a natural bend. His fluid motions allow him to mirror defenders and react to counter moves. Reid has exceptional balance for a player of his stature. He couples his fluid motions with good balance. This combination of skills allows Reid effectively pass and run block.
Technique: Reid is a technically sound offensive line prospect. He keeps his pad level low in both pass and run situations. He takes short, balanced, and coordinated steps as he works to the edge and moves defenders off the football. He is able to quickly get his hands up and inside the defender giving him the ability to velcro and control.
Pass blocking: The ability to quickly go from stance to set allows Reid to get into position prior to contact. He immediately gets his hands up and out in front of his body. His natural bend and thick lower half allow him to anchor through contact and remain balanced. His strong anchor and hand placement give him the ability to shut down bull rushes. Reid has quick and balanced steps which give him the ability to reach the edge against speed rushers. His quick feet are coupled with his ability to properly use angles. If there is any concern it would be when Reid faces extremely quick pass rushers.
Run blocking: Reid fires off the football low and rolls his hips into his target. This gives Reid a powerful punch and jolts the defender backwards. He gets his head underneath the defenders chin strap and uses his strong leg drive to move them off the ball. His inside hands are coupled with a heaviness which permits Reid to remain engaged after the initial contact. There is a nastiness to Reid's game as he constantly plays to the whistle.
Quickness: For his size, Reid has quick and agile motions. He explodes out of his stance and is able to quickly engage the defender. In his kick slide, Reid is able to quickly reach the edge while remaining coordinated enough to react to counter moves. When asked to climb to the 2nd level, Reid is able to reach his target and seal him from the play.
Strength: Reid generates a lot of his strength and explosiveness from his thick lower half. However, Reid doesn't play with natural strength and relies on his technique and leverage. While Reid is able to anchor well it did appear that stronger defensive linemen would be able to push the pocket.
Final word: In my opinion, Reid is an underrated prospect that looks to have a ton of potential. While his best fit is likely at right tackle his quick feet and use of angles make him versatile. Reid would be a nice selection at the back end of the 2nd round with the ability to contribute right away. He is more than capable in both the run and passing game and is one of my sleeper picks. He could be the Rodger Saffold pick of the 2011 draft!
