The Santa Anita Derby was supposed to be another showcase of Kentucky Derby contenders, but with Premier Pegasus and Jaycito scratched, the field was severely weakened. It was another Bob Baffert horse taking home the win after the famed trainer was forced to scratch his best horse in the race, Jaycito. Midnight Interlude, an excellent name for a horse, crossed the finish line in first ahead of Comma to the Top and Mr. Commons.
Unfortunately, the weakened field told us little about the upcoming Kentucky Derby as none of the horses stood out. Midnight Interlude took home the crown in the Santa Anita Derby's featured race at 13-1 odds, but is more of an afterthought than a contender. Silver Medallion, the favorite after the two early scratches, finished in fourth, unable to mount a challenge to Midnight Interlude.
