Boston Red Sox, Adrian Gonzalez Agree On Long-Term Contract

CSNNE.com's Sean McAdam is reporting that today the Boston Red Sox and Adrian Gonzalez will finally consummate a long-term contract extension that's been expected since Boston acquired Gonzalez from San Diego last December.

According to McAdam, the deal is for seven years and $154 million. It might have happened sooner, but if the deal had been official before Opening Day, the average annual value of the contract would have counted against the Red Sox' payroll this season when computing a possible luxury tax; instead, only Gonzalez's paltry $6.5 million salary for this season gets counted.

Like many of his teammates, Gonzalez is off to a slow start this season, with just one home run in 11 games. But he's faring better than the Red Sox' other huge off-season acquisition, as left fielder Carl Crawford -- signed to a seven-year, $142 million contract -- is batting just .152. And considering Gonzalez's brilliant road statistics while playing for the Padres, it's widely assumed that he will eventually take full advantage of Fenway Park's hitter-friendly dimensions.
