MTD live draft results and pick grades

I edited some of the pick grades. Recheck your teams grades. These are the final grades. Also, I will not be holding another live draft this year. I am debating whether or not I will run another one at all. The next live draft will likely not happen until after the 2011-2012 season.

I am going to give a grade to each and every team of this draft. The grades will take into account where a player was taken, what were the team needs, and UDFA's.

Pick  numbers will be represented as (round.total pick number)

The rest of the explanations will hopefully be added tomorrow.

Some notes:

  • A late round pick can't ruin a grade it can only help it
  • Reaching on a first round pick affects a grade more than getting a steal on a 3rd round pick
  • Don't threaten to kill me because of a pick grade

AFC North:

Cincinnati Bengals: A.J. Green (1.4), Andy Dalton (2.35), Tyler Sash (3.66), Demarcus Love (4.101), Pierre Allen (5.134), Mario Butler (6.167), Tori Gurley (7.207), Elijah Joseph (7.246), Jock Sanders (UDFA), Duke Ihenacho (UDFA), Guy Miller (UDFA), Jonathan Freeny (UDFA)

Grade: A-

Green, Dalton, Sash, and Love are all very solid picks. They should all make an impact in their first year. Allen and Butler were slight reaches but still solid picks. Gurley is a steal in round 7 and Joseph is a solid pick. The four UDFA's will struggle to make the roster. Very solid draft.

Cleveland Browns: Julio Jones (1.6), Adrian Clayborn (2.37), Curtis Brown (3.70), Quan Sturdivant (4.102), Jordan Cameron (5.137), Joe Lefeged (6.168), Stephon Burton (6.170), Mario Harvey (7.248), Adrian Moten (UDFA), Brian Lainhart (UDFA), Dane Sanzenbacher (UDFA), Gabe Miller (UDFA)

Grade: A

This was one of the best drafts of any team. Jones was a little reach in round 1 but still a great pick. Clayborn, Brown, Sturdivant, Cameron, Lefeged, Burton, and Harvey are all steals in their respective rounds. Their four UDFA's were also very good as well.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Prince Amukamara (1.8), Jah Reid (3.95), Lawrence Guy (5.162), Jeron Johnson (6.196), Vincent Brown (7.232), Mana Silva (UDFA), Kyle Hix (UDFA), Greg Lloyd (UDFA), Mike Blanc (UDFA)

Grade: A

This draft was about quality not quantity. Amukamara makes their defense almost impossible to attack. Reid was a slight reach but should be a very solid RT. Guy, Johnson, and Brown are all huge steals in there rounds. All four UDFA's could make the roster as well.

Baltimore Ravens: Derek Sherrod (1.26), Torrey Smith (2.36), Greg Romeus (3.90), Demarcus Van Dyke (5.164), Alex Linnenkohl (5.165), Mario Fannin (6.191), DeAndre Brown (7.225)

Grade: A-

This draft was decent and I had a tough decision between a B+ and an A-. Sherrod is ok in round 1 but trading up for Smith in round 2 when if he stayed put he could have gotten Titus Young is not that great. But hindsight is 20/20. Smith is still a very good player. Romeus is a reach in round 3. There last four picks are all very solid players.

AFC East:

Buffalo Bills: Cam Newton (1.3), Gabe Carimi (1.22), Chris Carter (3.81), Tim Barnes (5.133), Cedric Thorton (6.169), Andre Smith (7.206), Darvin Adams (7.245), Nick Bellore (UDFA), John Clay (UDFA)

Grade: B-

This draft started off good with Newton and Carimi but quickly took a turn for the worse with Carter and Barnes. Barnes is good value in the 5th but where is he going to play? He is a pure center and the Bills don't need a center. Thorton, Smith, and Adams are good picks.

New England Patriots: Robert Quinn (1.7), Anthony Costanzo (1.28), Corey Liuget (2.33), Demarco Murray (3.74), William Rackley (3.92), Jaiqwan Jarret (4.106), Ricky Elmore (5.159), Armon Binns (6.193), Chris Matthews (UDFA), Corbin Bryant (UDFA), Deron Mayo (UDFA), Elisha Joseph (UDFA)

Grade: C+

For all the picks the Patriots had they failed to take full advantage. Trading up for Quinn was ok and Costanzo was a pretty good pick. However, Liuget does not fit into a 3-4 defense at all. Murray and Rackley in round 3 are good as is Jarret in round 4. Elmore and Binns could have been replaced for better players at their positions. The UDFA's will likely be cut.

Miami Dolphins: Aldon Smith (1.15), Shane Vereen (3.79), Virgil Green (4.111), Delone Carter (5.146), Pat Devlin (6.179), Adam Grant (2.217), Ray Dominguez (2.218), Lee Smith (2.235)

Grade: B-

Smith in round 1 was not very good. The Dolphins are set at OLB and DE so I don't know why they take him. However, all their other picks except Lee Smith were good. Don't get picking a second TE even if it is in the 7th round.

New York Jets: Cameron Heyward (1.30), Austin Pettis (3.94), Jeremy Beal (4.126), Chykie Brown (5.161), Da'Rell Scott (6.194), Mike Mohammed (7.208)

Grade: B+

None of these picks were great but they were all very solid picks. They didn't reach for anybody but did not get any steals. Overall, a very good draft.

AFC South:

Houston Texans: Brooks Reed (1.11), Rahim Moore (2.42), Dontay Moch (3.73), DeAndre McDaniels (4.105), Buster Skrin (5.138), Alex Henry (6.178), Raymond Webber (7.214), Daniel Hardy (2.254), Josh David (UDFA), Scott Tolzien (UDFA), Andre Holmes (UDFA)

Grade: B

This draft would  have been an A if not for the epic reach for Brooks Reed. The smart thing to do would have been tot trade down into the mid 20's and then take Reed. Other than Reed, every other pick was good and their two UDFA"s were good as well. Too bad they wasted the 1st pick they had because this could have been special.

Jacksonville Jaguars: Justin Houston (1.16), Christian Ponder (1.29), Clint Boling (3.80), Ahmad Black (4.114), Cecil Shorts (5.147), Mike Coughlin (UDFA), Wyatt Middleton (UDFA), Abraham Kromah (UDFA)

Grade: C+

Houston at 16 was a pretty big reach but Ponder and Boling are both good picks. Black is a big time reach but Shorts is a very good pick. The UDFA's will never play for the Jags.

Tennessee Titans: Ryan Mallet (1.27), Sam Acho (2.48), Terrell McClain (2.63), Jurrell Casey (3.78), Chris Conte (4.122), Ronald Johnson (4.124), Akeem Dent (4.130), Allen Bradford (6.172), Markus White (6.181), Jerrod Johnson (7.215), Spencer Paysinger (7.229), Kris Durham (7.230), Vance Cuff (7.251), Eddie Jones (UDFA), Ryan McMahon (UDFA), Andrew Phillips (UDFA)

Grade: B

I really don't know what to do with this draft. Mallet and Acho are good. McClain was a reach. Casey was good. Conte was a reach. Johnson was good. Dent and Bradford were reaches. White was good. The next 4 were all decent. The UDFA's were decent. I guess a B will have to do but this could have been a B- or an B+ as well.

Indianapolis Colts: Nate Solder (2.34), Danny Watkins (2.53), Quinton Carter (3.68), Sione Fua (3.87), Jalil Brown (4.119), Charles Clay (5.152), Brian Rolle (6.188), Evan Royster (UDFA), Jeremiah Hunter (UDFA), Julian Vandervelde (UDFA), Ryan Pugh (UDFA)

Grade: A

What a fantastic draft by shake n bake. He struck gold with Solder and Watkins in round 2. Carter and Fua in round 4 are great as well. Brown in 4 is good. Only thing keeping this from an A+ is the Charles Clay pick. How many times a game to the Colts use a FB?

AFC West:

Denver Broncos: Patrick Peterson (1.2), Stephen Paea (2.46), Kendrick Ellis (2.58), Mikel Leshoure (3.71), Mark Herzlich (4.123), Lawrence Wilson (5.143), Jamie Harper (6.186), Stanley Havilli (6.189), Eric Hagg (7.247), Mike McNeil (UDFA), Nate Williams (UDFA), Karl Klug (UDFA), Justin Trattou (UDFA)

Grade: A

Only thing keeping this from an A+ is that they took 3 RB's. Why? However, all of the other picks were very good.

(explanations for the rest of the teams will be added as I get tiime)

San Diego Chargers: Muhammed Wilkerson (1.18), Leonard Hankerson (2.45), Casey Matthews (3.76), Ryan Williams (3.82), Nate Irving (4.108), Marcus Gilchrist (4.115), Derek Hall (6.201), Wesley Saunders (7.234)

Grade: B+
