Northern Illinois Linebacker Devon Butler Shot

Stay connected with SB Nation

Northern Illinois junior starting linebacker Devon Butler has been shot and is in a Dekalb, Illinois hospital today after a shooting incident sometime late Tuesday night in an off-campus apartment. Butler's current condition is not known, though Dekalb Police Chief Bill Feithen did say that Butler was alive in his statement this morning.

Local media confirmed Butler as the shooting victim with NIU officials this morning, though news of Butler's shooting spread via Facebook and and Northern Illinois message boards before any official news was released.

Two suspects are in custody, and though police have not released their names more information will be released later in the day, according to Dekalb Police. Butler's shooting was the third in a week's time in the area, though police said there was no reason to believe the three shootings were connected.

Butler started thirteen games for Northern Illinois in 2010 and was second on the team in total tackles.
