White Sox' Lastings Milledge DFA'd After Two Games

From the Chicago Tribune:

The Chicago White Sox moved to beef up their bullpen Thursdy by purchasing the contract of right-handed pitcher Jeff Gray from Triple-A Charlotte and designating outfielder Lastings Milledge for assignment.

I have to admit that I missed the news about Milledge joining the White Sox in the first place. But join them he did, playing in two games and doubling in four at-bats. And Milledge earned his roster spot in spring training, batting .305/.425/.525 in 59 at-bats, with his four home runs and 12 RBI both ranking him among the team leaders.

Milledge turned 26 two days ago. He's now played for four major-league teams, three of which tired of him pretty quickly. But there are still plenty of baseball men who remember that just five years ago, he was widely regarded as one of the dozen or so best prospects in the minor leagues. And the truth is that he hasn't been terrible in the majors. He just hasn't been good, or even average. And there have been questions, from time to time, about his attitude.

Considering Milledge's March performance and his pedigree -- first-round draft pick, once a top prospect -- he'll probably keep getting chances, just as Corey Patterson kept getting chances.
