Ross Ohlendorf Injury Rehab Shut Down Due To Renewed Discomfort

First, some quick background: Pirates starter Ross Ohlendorf missed the final several weeks of the 2010 season with a strain in his shoulder. Earlier this year, he was placed on the DL with another shoulder strain, and even though Ohlendorf said it wasn't as bad as the one he had a season ago, he admitted that it was in the same place.

As part of his rehab, Ohlendorf began a throwing schedule. He was targeting a return in mid- to late May, and has recently been throwing live batting practice, but on Wednesday, Colin Dunlap has some bad news:

pirates rhp Ross Ohlendorf will take some time off from throwing after experiencing soreness on Friday.

That's a setback. That's what a setback looks like. This isn't necessarily terrible, and Ohlendorf may only be out a little while, but he isn't coming back in May. Ohlendorf will be out indefinitely, and we'll await word on what's going on.

Having taken Ohlendorf's place in the rotation, Jeff Karstens has a 3.62 ERA over 32.1 innings and five starts. You can expect him to keep his job for however long Ohlendorf is out, unless he begins to stumble.
