Julio Borbon Hamstring Injury Requires DL Stint

On Friday night, Texas Rangers outfielder Julio Borbon had to be removed from a game with a hamstring injury sustained while playing the field in the top of the seventh. An MRI didn't reveal a tear, but it did show inflammation in the muscle, so on Saturday the Rangers placed Borbon on the disabled list and recalled veteran Endy Chavez.

What this means is that the Rangers' entire starting outfield of Borbon, Nelson Cruz, and Josh Hamilton is currently disabled. Borbon had himself a rough April, with poor batting numbers and inconsistent defense, but he'd batted .353 over his previous 11 games, so the injury comes at a bad time.

Chavez has worked his way back after undergoing major knee surgery following an on-field collision in 2009. He didn't play much in 2010, but he's been healthy so far in 2011 and has batted .305 with AAA Round Rock. He owns a career Major League OPS of .679 and was known to be a spectacular defensive outfielder, and even though age and injury have presumably taken some toll on his range, he should make for a fine stopgap until the Rangers' usual regulars get healthy.
