Kyle Davies Hurting, MRI On Deck

Monday night, Kansas City Royals starter Kyle Davies pitched to only three Indians -- walking two of them -- before getting lifted because of "anterior shoulder soreness". According to the Royals, Davies won't be placed on the Disabled List until he's had an MRI on his shoulder.

One thing that's definitely happening: After giving up 14 runs -- and setting all sorts of team, American League, and Milky Way records -- Vin Mazzaro's been sent back to triple-A Omaha, with left-hander Everett Teaford called up in his place. It's a lovely birthday present for Teaford, who turned 27 on Sunday. He's not one of those Royal prospects you've been hearing about since last fall, mostly because he's 27 and doesn't throw hard like the other guys. But he pitched well in double-A last season, has been even better in triple-A this season, and he has a chance to stick as a long man.

If Davies does get DL'd, Teaford might join the Royals' rotation. But Danny Duffy, who is a top prospect, has pitched exceptionally well in Omaha and might get the call. Of course, considering Davies' 7.46 ERA, most Royals fans would love to see Duffy pitching in Kansas City whether Davies has a diagnosable medical problem or not.

Actually, there might be room for Duffy either way, because Mazzaro's exit leaves an opening in the rotation this Wednesday. Stay tuned.
