Belmont Stakes 2011 Results, Payouts: Ruler On Ice Rolls As Favorites Fade

When Animal Kingdom slipped and nearly fell coming out of the gates, the 2011 Belmont Stakes was blown wide-open. We don't know if the Kentucky Derby winner would've had more in the tank had he not been forced to play catch-up at Belmont Park, but we do know Ruler on Ice took advantage, racing to the front of the field down the stretch and batting aside challengers down to the wire. The grudge match between Animal Kingdom and Shackleford never materialized as fresh faces took over in the Belmont Stakes.

With the win, Ruler on Ice earned his owners $600,000, a nice windfall for a horse that cost just $100,000 in 2009. If you were to ask around the track on Saturday before the race, few outside Ruler on Ice's contingent could've predicted he'd be in the winner's circle.

But Ruler on Ice's owners weren't the only ones to come out of the Belmont Stakes with full pockets. The long-shot winner, whose odds at race time were 24-1, gave bettors a nice payday. And with win, place and show spots occupied by horses few expected to be in the running, the exacta and trifecta payouts were jaw-dropping.

Belmont Stakes Results: Shackleford Fades Late, Finishes Fifth

Initially, things looked good for Preakness winner Shackleford's chances of getting a second straight Triple Crown race victory. But the Belmont's length did the fast-breaking horse in on the backstretch.

Shackleford was able to break cleanly and take a lead from the first furlong, and led through the first mile on the muddy Belmont Park track.

That early speed was mitigated by a clear attempt to conserve energy midway through the race, but that approach was neither good enough to build an unassailable lead for Shackleford or preserve enough stamina to finish the race strong. Shackleford faded on the backstretch, falling out of contention as Ruler on Ice and Stay Thirsty stayed on pace, and ultimately finished fifth, one spot ahead of Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom.

Shackleford's relatively long odds on the day — 10-1 in the late afternoon — turned out to be good ones.

2011 Belmont Stakes Results: Full Finishing Order From Saturday's Race

It was a less-than-expected race at Belmont Park on Saturday as Ruler on Ice ruled the day and downed the favorites in the 2011 Belmont Stakes. What was billed as a grudge match between the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes champions became a race for the underdogs as three of the more unheralded horses in the field finished atop the field, led by Ruler on Ice at 24-1 odds.

Derby winner Animal Kingdom slipped out of the gate, nearly dismounting his jockey, yet still attempted to mount a late-charge as Ruler on Ice catapulted to the front of the field. It wasn't a good day for the favorites, with Nehro finishing fourth, Shackleford fifth and Animal Kingdom sixth. Mucho Macho Man was just behind the group in seventh, and Master of Hounds was all the way back in 10th.

Below is the full results from the 2011 Belmont Stakes.

Belmont Stakes Results: Animal Kingdom Stumbles, Finishes Sixth

Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom was looking to become the first horse since 1995 to win the first and third races of the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes. Thanks to a near-catastrophe, he almost failed to finish.

Animal Kingdom broke very poorly, lagging behind a pack after slowly breaking from the No. 9 post position, then clipping the heel of Monzon as he tried to find room to run. That clip jerked the horse's neck up, and pulled jockey John Velazquez out of his stirrups as he tried to control him.

Velazquez was able to regain control and stay in the saddle, but because of that start, Animal Kingdom was forced to come from far behind the field. Ultimately, his outside run fell short at the end, despite briefly looking game enough to challenge for the lead.

Animal Kingdom, the odds-on favorite at post time at 5-2, finished sixth, one spot behind Preakness winner Shackleford.

Belmont Stakes 2011 Payouts: Ruler On Ice Pays Handsomely With Unpredictable Win

Just two years ago, Ruler on Ice was purchased for $100,000 and on Saturday at Belmont Park, he not only payed dividends, earning $600,000 for his Belmont Stakes win, but also payed well to bettors with the foresight to step out on a limb and wager on the 24-1 long-shot. Ruler On Ice survived charges from Animal Kingdom, Stay Thirst and Brilliant Speed down the stretch, nipping the field by a slim margin.

At 24-1, Ruler on Ice was an afterthought, and wasn't even considered among the year's top three-year-olds. It all meant the betting windows at the track were doling out large amounts for winning tickets, headlined by Ruler on Ice's $51.50 payout to win, $26.00 to place and $13.60 to show.

Below are the payouts for Ruler on Ice, Stay Thirsty and Brilliant Speed, as well as the Exacta and Trifecta Bets. Thanks to a group with long-odds crashing to win, place and show spots, the payout was humongous, and a few lucky souls likely reaped the benefits.

Belmont Stakes Winner: Ruler On Ice Scores Underdog Upset

Ruler on Ice, winner of the 2011 Belmont Stakes, earned an underdog victory in the race, beating the year's other two Triple Crown winners and muddy conditions to score a $600,000 payout.

Ruler on Ice had among the longest odds in the field heading into Saturday, paying out 42-1 as of Saturday morning before betting narrowed his final odds to 24-1 or lower.

The horse's win is the first Triple Crown race victory for both jockey Jose Valdivia, Jr. and trainer Kelly Breen. And it's a bit of sweet revenge after being excluded from the massive 2011 Kentucky Derby field.

Belmont Results: Ruler On Ice Wins 2011 Belmont Stakes

The 2011 Belmont Stakes was run on a muddy track under a gray New York sky. But that wasn't enough to prevent Ruler on Ice from staging a massive upset, winning the Belmont Stakes after going off as a 24-1 underdog.

Preakness winner Shackleford broke fast and led the field around the first turn, but faded late as Ruler on Ice and Stay Thirsty kept their pace to finish first and second. Brilliant Speed placed third.

Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom broke poorly, nearly bucking jockey John Velazquez after clipping Monzon. He ran dead last for the first mile of the race and was unable to complete a late run down the backstretch.

Ruler on Ice claimed a $600,000 purse for winning.

2011 Belmont Stakes: Post Time, TV Schedule, Current Odds And More

The final jewel of the 2011 Triple Crown season is the 2011 Belmont Stakes, and it's just hours away from Elmont, New York. Here's a brief overview of what Belmont viewers need to know.

The 2011 Belmont Stakes post time is 6:35 p.m. Eastern, if you want to skip the build-up and start watching right as the horses are loaded into the gate. It's one of 13 races being run at Belmont Park on Saturday, and features a 12-horse field that includes Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom and Preakness victor Shackleford. Those horses may be running on a wet track if rainy conditions continue.

The TV schedule for the Belmont gives horse racing fans more than four hours of coverage. Fans can tune into Versus at 3 p.m. for pre-race coverage, then flip to NBC at 5 p.m. for coverage that will last through the end of the Belmont Stakes. Versus will have post-race coverage starting at 7 p.m. Those who won't be in front of a TV for the race can also watch the Belmont Stakes online via a free feed from NBC.

The current Belmont Stakes odds have Animal Kingdom on top. He followed his Kentucky Derby triumph with a second place finish in the Preakness, and is currently a 5-2 favorite to win the 2011 Belmont.

Animal Kingdom is also looking to complete a rare Triple Crown feat: the last horse to win both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes was Thunder Gulch in 1995.

Animal Kingdom remains a 5-2 favorite to win the Belmont, but Nehro has closed from 5-1 to 7-2, and Master of Hounds has moved from 5-1 to 4-1. Even Preakness winner Shackleford, considered a long shot for most of the week, has had his odds drop, from 16-1 to 10-1.

Belmont Park Race Track: Rainy Weather Means Conditions Could Be Wet

The Belmont Stakes always stands as the longest of the three Triple Crown races in a given year. But with the weather forecast looking like rain in Elmont, New York, the Belmont Park track could be very wet for the 2011 Belmont Stakes, making this an even slower race than usual.

The Albany Times-Union reports that the Belmont Park track is wet as of Saturday morning, and that the current condition of that track could be exacerbated by more rain throughout the day before the Belmont post time. After a week of high temperatures at the Belmont in the run-up to the race, showers have dominated Saturday, and could make for a wet, muddy race if they persist through the afternoon.

The Times-Union also notes that two horses in the Belmont field have won on wet tracks: Ruler On Ice and Monzon. But Shackleford's trainer has suggested his horse could handle a wet course; it's less clear whether morning favorite Animal Kingdom would thrive or struggle on a muddy track.

Current Belmont Stakes Odds: Animal Kingdom Still Favored, Shackleford Slipping

Animal Kingdom opened as a 2-1 favorite in the 2011 Belmont Stakes, but early betting has moved the line, if only slightly. With the Belmont set for Saturday afternoon, Animal Kingdom currently sits at 5-2, still far-and-away the favorite among the 12 horses entered. Nehro and Master of Hounds hold the second-best odds at 5-1, with Mucho Macho Man right behind at 6-1.

Preakness Stakes winner Shackleford has fallen back, and now sits at 16-1 odds. Starting on the outside, Shackleford has some work to do if he wants to run from the front and on the rail, and that, coupled with the distance of the race, seems to have bettors wary.

Here are the latest odds after the early betting in New York.

1. Master of Hounds, 5-1
2. Stay Thirsty, 12-1
3. Ruler On Ice, 42-1
4. Santiva, 8-1
5. Brilliant Speed, 9-1
6. Nehro, 5-1
7. Monzon, 55-1
8. Prime Cut, 18-1
9. Animal Kingdom, 5-2
10. Mucho Macho Man, 6-1
11. Isn’t He Perfect, 39-1
12. Shackleford, 16-1

Belmont Stakes 2011: Animal Kingdom Faces Tough Draw From No. 9 Post Position

When the post positions for the 2011 Belmont Stakes were drawn on Wednesday, Animal Kingdom found himself in a tough spot. In the No. 9 gate, which sits just to the outside of center in the 12 horse field, the Kentucky Derby winner will have plenty of traffic to deal with, and a long way to go to dive inside to the rail. And if history is any indication, the odds are stacked against Animal Kingdom, despite his role as the morning line favorite.

The No. 9 gate holds somewhat of a curse, and the Kentucky Derby-Belmont Stakes double isn't an easy feat, either.

Animal Kingdom, ridden by John Velazquez, will leave from the No. 9 post, which has produced only four Belmont winners since 1905. The colt, trained by Graham Motion, is attempting to become the 12th to complete a Derby-Belmont sweep. The last to succeed was Thunder Gulch in 1995.

Unless Animal Kingdom stumbles, his post position shouldn't matter, though there is one factor we saw in play at the Preakness Stakes. Animal Kingdom will run near the back of the pack, and has demonstrated a quick burst to close, as well as the stamina to run well at the lengthier Belmont. Because he won't be jockeying for a spot at the front at the start of the race, the post position shouldn't have much of an impact.

But we do know Animal Kingdom doesn't like running in the wash of other horses. After the Preakness Stakes, jockey John Velazquez noted Animal Kingdom acted up when getting dirt kicked up in his face, and it made the earlier parts of the race tougher. Even still, if the race was just a tick longer, it's likely Animal Kingdom wouldn't hauled-in Shackleford and won the Preakness, and the lengthier Belmont gives him that extra room.

Watch The Belmont Stakes Live Online On NBC Website

Like the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, NBC will be streaming the 2011 Belmont Stakes live online beginning at 5 p.m. EDT. The race itself begins some 90 minutes later, with post time scheduled for 6:35 p.m. And while the Belmont lost some of its intrigue in the Preakness Stakes when Animal Kingdom failed in its bid for the Triple Crown, the race still serves as a grudge match, and features plenty of capable horses.

A live-stream of the Belmont Stakes can be found at NBCSports.com.

Both Animal Kingdom and Shackleford, winner of the Preakness Stakes, will run the Belmont, though the latter drew on the outside of the post, diminishing his chances to run the race he so desires. Nehro, Mucho Macho Man and Master of Hounds should all be in the mix, as well. The morning line can be found here and the updated odds can be found in this StoryStream throughout the day.

Belmont Stakes 2011: Shackleford, Trainers Deal With Record-Breaking Heat

Much of the East Coast is dealing with a record-setting heat wave, and the horses are the 2011 Belmont Stakes are no exception. With temperatures nearing 100 degrees in New York, Thursday's racing was canceled and trainers struggled to keep their horses cool and hydrated

Shackleford exercised at 9 a.m. before returning to his barn for water and a cool-down.

"He sweats a lot when it's hot," said Dale Romans, trainer of the Preakness winner. "That's good. He'll cool down faster that way when he gets some water."

But Dr. Michael Lindinger, a professor at the University of Guelph in Ontario, says that all this heat may be good for the horses, in the long run.

... exercise in heat is important and helpful for these horses, increasing their circulating blood volume up to 20%, as long as they are properly cooled and rehydrated. While Asmussen said Nehro would know how much water to drink after a workout, just as any human would, Lindinger contends otherwise."

The key, says Lindinger, is for trainers to get the horses completely hydrated state after each training workout.

Fortunately, rain Friday night ill bring cooler weather in time for Saturday's race, with temperatures in the 70s.

Belmont Stakes 2011: Animal Kingdom Win Could Be Great For Horse Racing

There's an underrated aspect of the Belmont Stakes that was brought up at SB Nation's horse racing blog, And Down The Stretch They Come, this week and it has nothing to do with the race itself. Instead, Animal Kingdom has a chance to lend legitimacy to a completely different thoroughbred bloodline and, perhaps, alter the sport for the better in the future. As it stands now, American horses are meticulously bred, and right now, Mr. Prospector's line is dominant.

But all that can change if Animal Kingdom is able to produce. The diversification of the bloodline, if breeders show a willingness to move away from Mr. Prospector's tree, is seen as a great thing by TFTribe, who wrote the following FanPost at And Down The Stretch They Come.

If Animal Kingdom can make LEROIDESANIMAUX not just a legitimate stallion, but an influential one, that is nothing but good for horse racing. One of the major issues that industry commentators always bring up is that the thoroughbred has been bred so specifically that they are now fragile. Well, focusing on one major lineage certainly cannot help that problem.

It's interesting, and a storyline that goes deeper than just the race. Give it a read for more information on the bloodlines and why he thinks an Animal Kingdom win -- which he believes is a real possibility -- would help the future of horse racing in America.

Updated Belmont Stakes Odds: Animal Kingdom Favored In Morning Line

With the post position draw for the 2011 Belmont Stakes came the morning line odds, or the first official betting lines for Saturday's race. As expected, Animal Kingdom was installed as the favorite, with Nehro just a tick behind and Shackleford a close third. If the odds are to be believed, the Belmont is a three-horse race, as well as a grudge match between the Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby winners.

Mucho Macho Man is also in the mix at 10-1, the same odds as Master of Hounds, who will start on the rail. The rest of the field holds 15-1 odds of worse, and Isn't He Perfect and Monzon were installed as the long-shots at 30-1.

Here are the morning line odds for Saturday's Belmont Stakes.

1 Master of Hounds 10-1
2 Stay Thirsty 20-1
3 Ruler On Ice 20-1
4 Santiva 15-1
5 Brilliant Speed 15-1

Belmont Stakes 2011: Stay Thirsty Has The Home Track Advantage

The 2011 Belmont Stakes post position draw happened Wednesday morning and Stay Thirsty drew the second position. That's a favorable spot for a horse that already has a bit of an advantage heading into Saturday's race.

Queens native and owner Mike Repole sees his horse's history on the track and in the area as a definite advantage.

"He has two wins and two seconds in New York."

Stay Thirsty finished 12th in the Kentucky Derby and fifth in the 2010 Breeder's Cup Juvenile.

The horse also comes from great, local pedigree. Stay Thirsty was sired by 2006 Preakness and Travers Stakes winner Bernardini, the son of the 1992 Horse of the Year A.P Indy.

Belmont Stakes 2011: Animal Kingdom, Shackleford Get In Final Practice Runs

2011 Belmont Stakes favorites Animal Kingdom, Nehro and Shackleford put the finishing touches on their race preparations, with the Kentucky Derby champion at one point declaring himself already quite prepared, and thank you:

There was one morning when [Animal Kingdom] decided he wanted to gallop a mile, rather than the planned mile and a half (he is quirky!).

Shackleford got in just enough work to show his team he's ready to contend, while Nehro appears to be getting in more frequent, but less vigorous, runs than his primary competition is. As The Rail's Alex Brown reports, all three connections are pleased with the results, though there's certainly more than one Animal Kingdom bettor now thinking about dialing back his or her wager by a third to counter that missing half-mile.

Belmont Stakes 2011: Shackleford Draws No. 12 Post Position, Animal Kingdom No. 9

The 2011 Belmont Stakes post position draw happened Wednesday morning, and the resulting Belmont post positions are neither particularly kind nor exceedingly unfair to either Kentucky Derby champion Animal Kingdowm or Preakness winner Shackleford.

Shackleford drew the No. 12 position, furthest from the rail in the 12-horse field, and Animal Kingdom will be No. 9, on the outside. Full post positions are as follows:

1. Master Of Hounds (10-1)
2. Stay Thirsty (20-1)
3. Ruler On Ice (20-1)
4. Santiva (15-1)
5. Brilliant Speed (15-1)
6. Nehro (4-1)
7. Monzon (30-1)
8. Prime Cut (15-1)
9. Animal Kingdom (2-1)
10. Mucho Macho Man (10-1)
11. Isn’t He Perfect (30-1)
12. Shackleford (9-2)

But while that draw doesn't give any major advantages, SB Nation's horse racing blog ;And Down The Stretch They Come writes that "the draw isn't really bad for anybody," and predicts that Shackleford will lead the Belmont Stakes early.

Belmont Stakes 2011 Odds: Animal Kingdom, Nehro Favored In Early Betting Lines

Animal Kingdom came up just short in the 2011 Preakness Stakes, falling to Shackleford by about a half a length, but at the lengthy Belmont Stakes, the oddsmakers are back on the Kentucky Derby winner. In the early betting lines, which come before Wednesday's post position draw, Animal Kingdom holds a slight edge over the field, with Nehro a close second. Preakness winner Shackleford has the third-best odds, but is well behind the two favorites at 5-1.

The Belmont field features plenty of familiar names as horses that have made appearances on the Triple Crown trail get back on the track this weekend. Mucho Macho Man, Santiva, Master of Hounds and others join the three favorites as they look to knock off Animal Kingdom and Shackleford in the third leg of the Triple Crown series. Though American horse racing's biggest prize isn't up for grab, a loaded field of three-year-olds is set to run at the Belmont.

Here are the latest odds for the 2011 Belmont Stakes.

Animal Kingdom: 5/2
Brilliant Speed: 14/1
Isn't He Perfect: 40/1
Master of Hounds: 7/1
Monzon: 30/1
Mucho Macho Man: 8/1
Nehro: 7/2
Prime Cut: 20/1
Ruler On Ice: 30/1
Santiva: 14/1
Shackleford: 5/1
Stay Thirsty: 20/1

Belmont Stakes 2011: Animal Kingdom Looks Sharp In Monday Workout

Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom is the early favorite to win the 2011 Belmont Stakes on Saturday. After the way the horse ran during workouts on Monday, that looks even more like a sure bet.

Animal Kingdom ran in company with another horse from trainer Graham Motion’s barn and covered the four furlongs in 47.76 seconds – the fastest of 32 times at the distance. He galloped out five furlongs (1000m) in 1:00.60.

Kingdom recorded fractions of 24.18, 47.76, 1:00.06, and 1:14.38 with ease that impressed those around him.

"He was halfway running off with me," Velazquez said. "I took him as slowly as I could. He got very competitive with the other horse. After he passed him after the wire, he kept galloping very strong. He knew he had the jockey on top of him because he just played with me."

For reference, Derby runner-up Nehro ran four furlongs in 50.88 seconds in his final Belmont tune-up.

Animal Kingdom will be attempting to become the 12th horse to win the Derby and the Belmont.

Belmont Stakes 2011: Third Time Might Be Charm For Mucho Macho Man

Three horses will have raced in all three legs of the Triple Crown as of this Saturday when The 2011 Belmont Stakes run. Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, Preakness winner Shackleford and Mucho Macho Man.

Trainer Kathy Ritvo is looking forward to the opportunity for her horse to take his turn in the winner's circle.

“I think he’s going to run well on this racetrack,” said Ritvo, who trains Mucho Macho Man for Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Dream Team Racing Stable. “It’s a great place to train a horse. It’s a great place to run. And I think the distance is going to suit him well. He’s the kind of horse who wants to keep going.”

Mucho Macho Man finished third in the Kentucky Derby and sixth in the Preakness.

Mucho Macho Man worked five furlongs in a strong 59.57 seconds over Belmont Park's main track Sunday morning.

Belmont Stakes 2011 Odds: Animal Kingdom, Nehro Among Favorites

The 2011 Belmont Stakes will run on Saturday, June 11 with a post time of 6:30 p.m. ET and the race will be aired on NBC.

Current odds are beginning to trickle in for the race and some of most notable contenders running are also among the early favorites.

Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom is the early favorite at 2-1. Unlike the Derby where he was 20-1, he won't be able to sneak up on anyone this time.

The showdown everyone is waiting for is between Kingdom and Preakness winner Shackleford (9-2). If either of these horses wins the Stakes, expect it to be named Horse of the Year.

Don't count out Nehro (7-2). Nehro is set up to win a race like this. With speed and stamina, Nehro seems to have the best combination of the vitals needed.

Master of Hounds and Mucho Macho Man both clock in at 8-1 odds right now. Expect both to be in contention and among the top six horses on the day.

Belmont Stakes 2011: Derby Winner Animal Kingdom To Begin Workouts On Monday

Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom is taking a different approach when it comes to June 11th's Belmont Stakes.

Animal Kingdom will ship to Belmont Park about a week before the Belmont Stakes and is scheduled to start working out on Monday. That's a stark contract to the Preakness, where Kingdom arrived at Pimlico on the day of the race. In fact, the horse hasn't left Fair Hill at all other than to race the Preakness.

Daily Racing Form reported Tuesday that Animal Kingdom would most likely ship from trainer H. Graham Motion’s Fair Hill Training Center base in Northeast Maryland on Saturday, get his first feel for Belmont on Sunday, and start working Monday. Motion confirmed this but said the only variable to change that schedule would be weather.

The Belmont Stakes 2011 is on Saturday, June 11. Post time is 6:30 p.m. ET and the race will be aired on NBC.

Belmont Stakes 2011: Preakness Winner Shackleford Expected To Contend

Following Shackleford's win at the 2011 Preakness Stakes on Saturday, trainer Dale Romans spoke to the media on Sunday about the horse's chances of running in the 2011 Belmont Stakes. Romans indicated that Shackleford has a good shot at running in the final leg of the Triple Crown next month:

"I thought last night of going onto Belmont right away," said the 44-year-old Louisville native. "But I wanted to send him back to Kentucky so we’ll get him with his regular team, go over him, watch him train a couple days and then make the decision. Ultimately it will be Mike’s (Lauffer) call, but he’ll let me have a lot of input, I’m sure. If he trains like he did going into the Derby, I don’t know why we would pass. I think it’s better than 50-50."

Meanwhile, it is still unclear if Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, who came in second at the Preakness, will run in the Belmont. Trainer Graham Motion said on Sunday that they will give the horse a week or two to recover before commenting on the likelihood of Animal Kingdom entering the race.

The Belmont Stakes 2011 is on Saturday, June 11. Post time is 6:30 p.m. ET and the race will be aired on NBC.
