Duke will not get a chance to defend its title. Thanks to a strong defense showing, the unseeded Maryland Terrapins shut down the Duke Blue Devils in the Final Four to advance to the National Title game Monday.
The Terrapins will meet the University of Virginia, which earlier today beat the University of Denver 14-8 in the other National Collegiate Athletic Association lacrosse semifinal at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. The championship game is May 30.
Grant Catalino had three goals and Joe Cummings added two for Maryland, which last won the tournament in 1975 when the Terrapins defeated Navy. Goalie Nick Amato had 13 saves.
Duke never got into rhythm on offense as Max Schmidt, Brett Schmidt, and Ryder Bohlander limited Blue Devils attackmen to a combined three goals and three assists.
