The Turkish Super Lig match between Bursaspor and Besiktas, schedule for 8 PM local time, will not be played as scheduled due to safety concerns. Supporters of both fans clashed prior to the match, the violence leading to the Besiktas team being trapped inside their Bursa hotel. The police have closed streets in Bursa, trying their best to calm things down and lessen the confusion.
Bursaspor, winners of last year's Super Lig title and currently sitting in third, were relegated some years back, and apparently supporters still blame Besiktas for that relegation. There's no word yet on whether the match has simply been abandoned or cancelled outright, although LigTV is saying "abandoned". With Bursaspor nearly twenty points out of the Champions League positions, the match has little bearing on entry into the top tournament. However, Besiktas, in sixth, still have an outside shot at a Europa League spot.
A special thanks to Ata Dizdar for the quick updates on the situation in Turkey.
