On Sunday, the Dallas Mavericks have the opportunity to execute the most shocking NBA Playoffs upset since, well, 2007. Dallas needs one more win to sweep the Los Angeles Lakers, winners of three consecutive Western Conference titles and two straight NBA Championships. Dallas has won two stunning last-minute comebacks in the series, bookending a thorough beatdown in L.A. Game 4 is in Dallas; coverage begins at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
The Memphis Grizzlies knocked off the San Antonio Spurs as an eighth seed in the first round this year, but San Antonio was banged up and Memphis played wonderfully down the stretch. Though the Mavericks finished the season with a record identical to that of the Lakers', they were seen as wild underdogs in this series. The Mavericks have struggled in the playoffs since losing the 2006 NBA Finals, and the Lakers have obviously been quite good.
That 2007 series that "Mavericks sweep Lakers" could replace as the reigning shocker of the league? That'd be Warriors over Mavericks, in which a 67-win Dallas team fell to the eighth-seed Warriors. Killing that legacy would make a sweep over the Lakers doubly amazing.
