College World Series 2011, UNC Vs. Vanderbilt Final Score: Commodores Eliminate Tar Heels With 5-1 Victory

The Vanderbilt Commodores eliminated the North Carolina Tar Heels from the 2011 College World Series following their 5-1 victory on Wednesday night. Vandy starter Taylor Hill was the key to victory, as he allowed just that one run in seven innings. Though he walked four and needed 126 pitches, he was able to use his sinker effectively throughout the night.

Vanderbilt went up early when Tony Kemp, who tripled to start the bottom of the first, scored on a sacrifice fly. Sophomore Connor Harrell blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the second for a 4-0 lead. Curt Casali added another Vandy home run in the bottom of the third inning.

The Tar Heels got on board in the top of the fifth with a bases-loaded ground out, but they were unable to do anymore after that. Hill was dominant and Corey Williams allowed zero runs and hits in his two innings of relief.

The Commodores will face the Florida Gators on Friday afternoon. If Vandy wants to advance to the championship series, they will need to beat the Gators twice.

UNC Vs. Vanderbilt, NCAA Baseball Score: Tar Heels Score, But Vandy Leads, 5-1

The North Carolina Tar Heels are trying their best to overcome Vanderbilt's lead in this 2011 College World Series game, but they still trail, 5-1, through six innings. In the top of the fifth inning, the Tar Heels finally made Taylor Hill work his way out of an inning. Two singles and a walk gave Ben Bunting an at-bat with the bases loaded. Bunting hit into an RBI ground out. Colin Moran, ACC Freshman of the Year, was intentionally walked to load the bases again, but to no avail for North Carolina. Jacob Stallings, who doubled in both of his previous at-bats, struck out to end the inning.

Curt Casali hit a home run in the bottom of the third inning to add the Commodores' fifth run of the game. North Carolina has already gone through four pitchers. Starter Greg Holt left after 2.2 innings and then saw Tate Parrish finish the third. Chris Munnelly was brought in to start the fourth, but after back-to-back singles he left the game with two left-handed hitters coming up. R.C. Orlan settled things down and kept Vandy off the board.

College World Series 2011, UNC Vs. Vanderbilt Score: Commodores Lead, 4-0, As Connor Harrell Homers

The Vanderbilt Commodores took an early 4-0 lead in this 2011 College World Series elimination game with the North Carolina Tar Heels. Designated hitter Connor Harrell blistered a middle-of-the-plate pitch to left center field for a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning for the big damage.

After UNC went down 1-2-3 to start the game, Vandy's Tony Kemp led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple. On a pitch up and outside, Kemp smacked it center field, sending CF Ben Bunting to chase it down. He scored during the next plate appearance when Anthony Gomez hit a sacrifice fly to RF Seth Baldwin.

North Carolina starter Greg Holt hit the next batter, 1B Aaron Westlake, but he quickly recovered from that when Curt Casali hit into an inning-ending double play. The Tar Heels threatened in the second inning following a leadoff double by C Jacob Stalling and a 2B Tommy Coyle walk, but Vandy starter Taylor Hill got consecutive strikeouts and a ground out to escape unscathed.

College World Series 2011: UNC, Vanderbilt Fight To Stay In Omaha

Which fanbase needs this College World Series elimination game win more? Vanderbilt Commodores fans, who are the closest they've ever come to reaching a national title in a sport besides bowling, or North Carolina Tar Heels fans, who -- well, you feel pretty bad for the Heels right now, don't you?

The winner will get a chance to take on the Florida Gators on Friday. For Vandy, it would mean a third chance to beat the Gators in the postseason. But for the Heels, Wednesday night's game itself is a rematch -- Vanderbilt won this matchup 7-3 in Round 1.

Thus far the SEC is undefeated in Omaha against teams from other conferences, with a pair of wins over the ACC. UNC will have to better contain Vandy's steady aluminum if they expect to do anything about that.

If you don't have a dog in this fight, who are you rooting for?
