Churchill Downs Cancels Friday Races Following Tornado Damage

The Churchill Downs horse race track, longtime home to the Kentucky Derby, was hit by a tornado Wednesday and suffered massive damage. Due to the excessive nature of the damage, Thursday's racing card has been cancelled.

No injuries were reported, however thousands of people in the area were without power Wednesday night.

Some horses have been shipped to other sites and barns given that many of the local ones are gone. Training was also canceled. 200 horses were being housed in nine barns.

It's not the first time Churchill Downs has been damaged by a natural disaster. In August 2009, a flash flood damaged the Kentucky Derby Museum, causing it to be closed for nine months.

Check out some more photos of the damage here and stay tuned for updates on the track and whether or not racing will pick up again over the weekend.

Churchill Downs Tornado Scatters Horses And Damages Barns

Sports and tornadoes shouldn't have much of anything to do with each other, but already this year we've seen twisters come way too close to Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium and the University of Oklahoma's campus before weather sirens began to have their way with the College World Series' schedule.

Now add Louisville's Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby. The Courier Journal reported a tornado touched down in the course's infield, damaging a pair of buildings, but the Associated Press report specified damage to at least five barns and provided the most visual detail: "horses were running loose."

No animals or humans have been reported injured -- there were people at the facility at the time, including security personnel, workers who live on-site and fans watching a race simulcast. Races were scheduled at Churchill Downs for Thursday, but have been canceled
