The move has been buzzed about for over a month now, but Galatasaray have finally completed the signing of Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera from Serie A side Lazio. The Turkish former-giants finished eighth last season, although allegations of match-fixing suggest that standing may not have been true to form. Still, the cim bom did struggle in the Super Lig, surprisingly for a club that has won the top division 17 times. They're clearly hoping the signing of Nando helps at least shore up their defense.
Lazio fans might giggle at that proposition. While the Roman club did have one of the best defensive records in Serie A last season, that was due more to the likes of Stephan Lichtsteiner (sold to Juventus) than the performances of Muslera, who was often just as likely to cause fans to cover their eyes in horror as to applaud with glee. Dubbed castorino, or Little Beaver, by the Lazio fans, Muslera often allowed balls to roll under his fingertips, or wiggle out from beneath him, and end up across the goal line.
Still, Muslera only just turned 25, practically a newborn by goalkeeper standards. His performances for Uruguay in the Copa American have been nothing short of outstanding, even earning him Man of the Match in La Celeste's quarterfinal penalty shootout against Argentina, in which he stopped Carlos Tevez's shot to earn the team a spot in the semi-finals, but even more impressing was his save in the 120th minute, forcing that shootout. Muslera really has nowhere to go but up, and this Fenerbahce supporter, for one, is jealous that Galatasaray netted him.
