Steve Smith Signs With Eagles Over Giants, According To Report

Stay connected with SB Nation

The Philadelphia Eagles have added to their already glittering free agent haul, signing Steve Smith away from the New York Giants. Smith was expected to re-sign with the Giantsespecially after visiting with the team this week. There were no reports of meetings with Philadelphia prior to signing the one-year deal worth up to $4 million.

Smith may have to wait a while before seeing the field. His former Giants' teammates expected him to miss at least the first month of the NFL season due to his recovery from micro-fracture knee surgery. Assuming he does return to full strength, the Eagles will get a reliable and instinctive possession-type receiver to complement their big-play threats, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.

Smith's move to Philadelphia leaves the Giants with the likes of Victor Cruz and Domenik Hixon competing for the third receiver spot being Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham.
