Yep, it's official. And yep, this is the time that Arsenal chose to announce it. In the middle of the Spanish SuperCup between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, Arsenal FC announced via their official website that they have agreed to terms with Barcelona for the transfer of midfielder Cesc Fabregas, a well-noted product of La Masia. It appears that the world's longest transfer saga is finally coming to an end, subject to a medical and the player agreeing to personal terms with the club. Both are expected to be mere formalities.
Whether or not Fabregas will start in a midfield crowded by Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and top prospect Thiago Alcantara remains to be seen. The transfer fee is currently undisclosed, but previous reports put the figure in the neighborhood of €40m. Arsenal drew their opening fixture of the English Premier League season 0-0 against Newcastle United in which Fabregas did not play.
