Read More: 2012 winter classic, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers
The 2012 Winter Classic has long been rumored to be a matchup between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers. Three months later, however, the NHL is set to formally announce the game.
The Flyers and Rangers game on January 2 will be officially announced by the league next week, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. The fifth annual outdoor game is scheduled to take place at Citizens Bank Park.
The reason that the game's announcement was delayed so long is because the Philadelphia Phillies had to sign off on their baseball stadium having hockey played in it.
The Phillies are expected to finally sign off on the rental terms for Citizens Bank Park to make the deal "done and documented," the source said. NHL officials have visited Citizens Bank Park numerous times over the past few weeks to hammer out the details.
The Daily News expects that tickets, which should be hot sellers, will go on sale following the official announcement of the outdoor game.
